DICE knows how poorly received the beta was. But they aren't throwing in the towel; across a number of platforms, they're trying to reassure fans of all the changes they're going to make in time for launch.
Battlefield 2042's recent beta was very poorly received. There were simply too many complaints about the game to list, but you can read our full review here (if that score shocks you, trust us, we were a lot kinder than the community).
That being said, EA DICE isn't giving up. They're going to make changes, and they're going to try to win back the trust of the player base. Now, people are still excited for Portal, so that's very good for the game's prospects. But the multiplayer was clearly a problem area, and that's where they've focused these changes.
12 Changes Coming To Battlefield 2042
The following changes are going to be in Battlefield 2042 on launch. Some of these were removed from the beta build when it was branched off from the main build, and some of them are changes they've made in response to feedback.
General
- Revive will be improved and made quicker, which is fantastic news because in the beta, this was very poorly designed.
- Increased Tornado likelihood. A lot of people were struggling to find a game where this weather event would occur, and it was one of the things people were most excited to see.
- Elevators will actually work in the full game, they did sort of work in the beta, but they weren't perfect. The difficulty is that they want elevators that move through the physical space rather than teleporting players to the top. This is new for the dev team, and so it's somewhat forgivable that elevators were so janky in the beta.
Movement
- Strafe slide will be added, allowing players to move horizontally at speed. This could be divisive; Battlefield fans prefer a slower game.
- They're going to nerf jump spamming. Whereas in CoD you can and should jump around constantly, DICE wants to avoid this becoming a common playstyle in Battlefield.
Vehicles
- The number of possible tanks will be increased to 4 per team, so 8 total. In the beta, it was only 2 per team, or 1 every 64 players, which was obviously not enough.
- Vehicle exit and enter animations will be made shorter. This should help combat the overall feeling of sluggishness.
- Vehicles will be customizable, and there will be armament options to choose from as well as paint schemes.
Weapons
- Guns will have out-of-combat customization, which is great news because the lack of attachment choice was very poorly received in the beta.
- FPS drops while aiming should be fixed. It was noticed particularly on snipers that when zoomed in, your FPS would drop quite significantly, so again, this is a great change.
Specialists
- You will be able to run servers completely without Specialists in Portal. This is fantastic as they were despised.
- Blue or red strips will be added to the arms of the character models to differentiate which side they're on.
Are these changes enough to win back your trust? We're not convinced the multiplayer can be saved, honestly, but it's encouraging to see them try.
