Battlefield 2042's Hazard Zone mode has now been revealed - it looks like they've invested a lot of their resources into it - so will they let us play it for free?
Battlefield 2042's third mode has now been unveiled - Hazard Zone. You get dropped onto one of the multiplayer maps and have to fight 8 other teams for special 'Data Drives'. Then you can bug out with your resources like Tarkov, or stay in and have a Battle Royale style ending. It's fun, it's got replayability and universal appeal. So, is it free to play?
Is Hazard Zone Free-To-Play?
No, Hazard Zone is not free-to-play, it's only accessible to those who own Battlefield 2042. Yeah, we were pretty shocked as well. If they want to take on their competitors in a serious way, then they need a free-to-play mode. Unfortunately, though, this mode could well die within a few months. It looks like it could have serious mainstream appeal too, that's the most galling thing.
Many leakers, and one in particular - Tom Henderson, have adamantly claimed that a free-to-play mode was coming. Could this have been a last-minute change? Could we be getting a more expansive mode further down the road? We'll need to wait and see.

How Have The Fans Reacted To Hazard Zone Not Being F2P?
Very poorly. Very poorly, indeed. Many of them will be buying the game themselves, so they will get access to the mode. But it bodes poorly for the future of Battlefield 2042, and by extension, the entire franchise. More than anything, it just seems weird, as the popular gaming personality Westie put it:
Hazard Zone isn't free to play. It's a part of #Battlefield2042.I think that's a huge mistake and I'm genuinely very surprised that DICE and EA has chosen this route.

And he's absolutely right. This seems like a very short-sighted move from EA, because a lot of people will refuse to pay for the full game after that beta...
