In lieu of a story, Battlefield 2042's story and setting will be introduced by way of a short film that premieres on August 12. The piece is called Exodus and from the short teaser we can tell, there's going to be some kind of conflict at sea. Exciting stuff.
When we first heard that Battlefield 2042 would launch without a singleplayer, we have to admit it didn't come as a surprise. For many years now, shooters have been increasingly abandoning the old three-part singleplayer / multiplayer / co-op format, and it makes sense, given how wildly popular multiplayer is compared to those other modes. Singleplayer was beginning to feel like an obligation or duty rather than a joy.
That being said, it's still hugely appreciated when devs make an effort to introduce us to the story and to the world in which a game is set. Even in shooters. So the news that EA has funded a short film to introduce Battlefield 2042 is great news. It's called Exodus and all we can tell so far, is that it will involve some kind of naval combat.
Where Can You Watch Exodus?
Right here on EarlyGame of course, in fact, you can already watch a teaser for Exodus below. So before we do anything else, why don't you check it out:
We knew it would be vaguely nuclear, but the maritime theme of Exodus makes us wonder about certain maps to come...

When Can You Watch Exodus?
Exodus will 'go live' and be available to watch from 12:00 ET on August 12 (17:00 BST, 18:00 CEST). At that time, the video above will no longer play a trailer, but instead the full film, which is not feature-length of course, but should be around 10-20 minutes.
If we're not getting a singleplayer then I, for one, am glad they've made some effort to introduce the story and setting of Battlefield 2042.
