The fate of this year's BlizzCon has been on the line for some time. Now it's official: Blizzcon 2020 is canceled. What happens next?
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, several major gaming events have fallen victim to the virus. Not only E3 and Gamescom have been canceled, but also many big esports tournaments had to be postponed or shelved. Most organizers have adapted to the situation by switching to online events. Similarly, Blizzard seems to be planning to do the same.
Already two months ago, Blizzard issued a statement announcing that they were not sure if BlizzCon could take place this year. This news reached us shortly after America declared a state of emergency. Last night, a new statement was released announcing the final cancellation of this popular annual event.

In Blizzard's statement, it is explained that there was a long discussion about whether and how it might be possible to hold an event like BlizzCon in the current global lockdown. After careful consideration, they came to the conclusion that BlizzCon 2020 should be canceled. There is still light at the end of the tunnel, though. BlizzCon Executive Producer Saralyn Smith also said that they are working on finding an online solution for both game announcements and updates, as well as for the upcoming esports tournaments. However, since this requires some preparation, the project is expected to be ready in early 2021.
Whether we can still expect game announcements this year is still in the stars, but we definitely expect that Blizzard will let us know how things will continue. It's quite possible that Blizzard will soon announce more news about titles like Diablo 4 or Overwatch 2 before Spring 2021, or at least we hope so.
