Call of Duty: Vanguard has just been released, and of course people are wondering what the best guns in the game are. We started grinding Vanguard on day one and have a pretty good understanding of the strength and weaknesses of each weapon by now. So, what do we do with our godlike knowledge? Wee, of course we will share it with you, our beloved readers. If you want to go into more detail, we already got separate tier lists for each weapon category in Vanguard with the respective setup guides and also the best overall loadouts.

But that is not what we are going to talk about today. Today we will show you the top 10 weapons in CoD: Vanguard, regardless of the categories, ranked from worst to best:

MG42

MG42 Vanguard

The MG42 is hands down the best LMG in Vanguard so far. It boasts excellent recoil control, a ridiculous high rate of fire and is by far not as slow as you might think. With 125 rounds in the mag, it is also possible to mow down a whole team without having to reload. Despite its good mobility, it is however still a light machine gun that isn't well suited for fast run-and-gun gameplay. In CoD: Vanguard the MG42 is best used to lock down objectives or one way passages. So if you want to use an LMG in the current Call of Duty, pick the MG42 but be aware of how to use it. Here is our best MG42 setup guide for Vanguard.

Kar98k

The Kar98k is back again! The Modern Warfare version is dominating Warzone since its release, and the new Vanguard Kar98k could even be better. For fast-paced multiplayer matches a sniper rifle needs to be fast, really fast, and that is exactly what the Kar excels in. it has the fastest ADS-speed and is pretty mobile overall. If you like playing aggressively and have good aim, try the Kar and one-shot everyone. Here is our best Kar98k setup guide.

M1928

The M1928, also known as Tommy Gun, is probably one of the best choices if you are a fan of quick run-and-gun close range combat. It has a really high rate of fire and a huge magazine. Fit it out for hip fire accuracy and mobility, and you are good to go – at least on the smaller maps. Just keep in mind that you won't get any kills on people further away than 20 meters. Here is our best M1928 setup guide.

Volkssturmgewehr

The Volkssturmgewehr, or just Volk, has a high rate of fire and is extremely mobile. It actually feels a bit more like an SMG with better range and a bit more damage. However, it comes with quite a bit of recoil, so it is best used in short range combat. Slap some good attachments on there, and you have a fun little gun, that can get the job done (I am a rhyme god). Check out our best Volk setup guide, if you want to give it a try.

Type 100

Type 100 Vanguard

The Type 100 is a rather strange SMG. It doesn't have the best rate of fire or the best mobility, but it has great recoil control, accuracy, and range. At first, it will feel a bit slow and not strong at all, if unlock some attachments though, it is a real beast. If you are looking for an SMG, that can be played at range, the Type 100 is the gun to go. Here is our best Type 100 setup guide.

Automaton

Automaton Vanguard
Yes, Automaton is a strange name, but the gun really slaps. | © Activision

The Automaton does look a bit clumsy, but it actually is really fast. Like with the Type 100 it won't feel that strong in the beginning but gets way better with the right attachments. It has a ridiculous high rate of fire and almost no recoil at all. What else could you wish for? To make the best use of it, we recommend using it for longer distances due to its awesome accuracy. We also have a perfect Automaton setup guide for you.

Combat Shotgun

Combat Shotgun Vanguard
The one and only Shotgun that is worth playing at the moment. | © Activision

Shotguns in general aren't that good in Call of Duty: Vanguard. They just don't have the damage and range you need to do reliable one-shots. However, if you prefer fast-paced run-and-gun gameplay on small maps like Das Haus, the Combat Shotgun can be really good. Slap a few attachments on and keep running as fast as you can while shooting your foes directly in the face. It is a one trick pony but if played correctly the enemy team will hate you forever. Check out our Combat Shotgun setup guide.

Welgun

A really strong SMG. | © Activision

The Welgun came into the game with the Season 1 Mid-Season Update and is a damn strong MP. It can be somewhat compared to the MP-40, as it is also a very good all-rounder. It is mobile, but still has range and very good damage. With the right attachments, it's currently one of the best weapons in the game. Of course, we have already prepared the best Welgun loadout guide for you.

MP-40

MP 40 Vanguard
The MP-40 by now is the best SMG in Vanguard. | © Activision

The MP-40 is the best SMG, if not even the best weapon in the game right now. It is incredibly versatile, hits like a truck and can be played on almost any distance – as far as regular multiplayer maps are concerned. Players are already complaining and asking for it to be nerfed, so better be quick if you want to get a piece of that absolutely broken gun, before the nerfs hit. Try our best MP-40 setup guide to rack up some kills.

STG44

STG44 Vanguard
The STG44 is absolutely broken. | © Activision

The STG together with the MP-40 is the most broken gun in Vanguard at the moment. It is incredibly easy to use and can be outfitted for basically every situation you can think of. Increase the rate of fire and slap on a drum magazine for CQC. Choose a longer barrel and a magazine with more damage for range and consistent two-shot-kills. The STG can do almost everything and for this reason is one of the most played guns in Vanguard since launch. Try our best STG44 setup guide and level that beast before it gets nerfed.

As can be seen by our tier list, so far the MP-40 and STG44 are the two big outliers that will make up 90% of each lobby – at least it feels like that, if you check the killfeed. But we are pretty sure that those two weapons will get nerfed sooner or later, so maybe try out some of the other guns too, to be prepared as soon as that happens.

That concludes our tier list of the currrently best weapons in Call of Duty: Vanguard. Of course, the list will change as soon as new weapons are introduced or Sledgehammer decides to make some balancing changes. If that should happen, we will make sure to update our tier list and keep you all up to date about the current meta and what guns to use.
