You're wondering whether Modern Warfare 3 supports split screen? We will explain the MW3 split screen mode and how to set it up for you.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the sequel of last year's Modern Warfare 2. It continues the campaign's story and will bring back all maps of the original Modern Warfare 2 from 2009. But can we also enjoy Modern Warfare 3 in split screen, like in the good old days?
Call of Duty always had a split screen mode in the past and some gamers probably expect that from a CoD, however, it's not quite that simple these days. In this article, we're going to go through the split screen options in MW3 and show you how to set it up.
Does Modern Warfare 3 Have Split Screen?
Modern Warfare 3 Campaign Split Screen
While it isn't confirmed yet, we are pretty sure the MW3 campaign will not support split screen. MW2019 as well as MW2 and also BOCW and Vanguard didn't feature a campaign split screen mode as well, so it is very unlikely for Mw3 to reintroduce it.
Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer Split Screen
For multiplayer, it's a different story: most likely you can play Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer split screen both online and locally. But if you do want to play online then you will need two online accounts (Xbox Game Pass Core, PS Plus Essential) signed in – you can't just use one online account and a guest. The split screen is restricted to team games though, you cannot play free-for-all modes. For obvious reasons.
Modern Warfare 3 Zombies Split Screen
The Zombie mode – the one that fans would most want to be able to play on their couch with a friend in split screen – will probably be another letdown in this department. We couldn't play Vanguard's Zombies mode split screen, so most likely MW3 Zombies will also not support it. Yep, MW3 Zombies will probably be online co-op or solo only.
How To Set Up Split Screen In Modern Warfare 3
To play split screen multiplayer in Modern Warfare 3, you need to do the following (at least if it works the same as in MW2):
Local Multiplayer
- Sign in to Modern Warfare 3 on any account, online-enabled or otherwise
- Go into the “Multiplayer” menu and press either Y or △ on Xbox or PlayStation respectively to create a local game
- Sign in to a separate account on a separate controller, online-enabled or otherwise, and press A or X to join the game
- The player who sets the game up should be able to fill the game with bots and choose any map or mode they desire. Both players have access to all weapons and attachments in a local game and can use whatever they want.
Online Multiplayer
- Sign in to Modern Warfare 3 with an online-enabled account
- Sign in on a separate online account on another controller. Both accounts need to have PS Plus Essential or Xbox Game Pass Core.
- From the “Multiplayer” menu, the second account must press A or X to join the lobby
- The player who sets the lobby up can now choose to matchmaker
We've found in previous CoDs that the older-gen consoles struggle with split screen, but can still just about perform at a level you would describe as playable. The present-gen consoles should have no issues running MW3's multiplayer in split screen mode. Enjoy!
