Jobs for Gamers: A Caster's Job
What Casters Do
Casters play an incredibly important role in the esports ecosystem, as they're in charge of commentating the games that are played. In order to do so, casters need an extensive knowledge of the game that they're commentating, in order to make the esports gameplay understandable for viewers. Unlike a host, who is in charge of presenting an esports tournament or event, introducing teams and hyping up the crowd, a caster will commentate the live events of a game.

Both jobs require great communication skills and the ability to think on your feet, in case anything goes wrong during a broadcast. Often times, the roles of hosts and casters will intertwine, and some hosts will work as casters and vice versa. Nonetheless, this doesn't always have to be the case.
There's not just a difference between casters and hosts, though. Casters can be split up into two further types as well.
Play-by-play caster
A play-by-play caster commentates everything he sees during a game. They'll describe every action on screen and bring the whole game to life. This is an important aspect of casting, as some viewers won't necessarily understand everything that is going on during a game, but will learn through the commentary of a play-by-play caster.

Color casters
The other type of caster is a color caster. They're in charge of giving additional knowledge about the games. Whether it be an analysis of the past games, further information about esports teams and their players or just sharing statistics and stories from past games, a color caster helps bring color and diversity to the commentary. A color caster is just as important as a play-by-play caster, as both give extensive and enjoyable information about the esport in question.
Often times there aren't separate play-by-play and color casters. Both types melt together in the job description of a caster, which brings a bunch of variety to the job!
