Crossplay, a feature many have asked about ever since the announcement of Riot’s new shooter, Valorant. Recently the developers revealed that the closed beta won’t be delivering it.

Valorant won’t have crossplay in its closed beta. The news was revealed on Reddit by one of the Riot employees. A player asked:

Is there any chance that in the future we'll be able to move regions/shards freely? I'm in the US and can't play with my brothers in Mexico. Right now it feels like we'll never be able to play Valorant together, which pretty much ruins the game for me.

The developer /u/ZealousApathy answered:

We don't have any plans to allow cross-region matchmaking right now. I'm not ruling it out forever, but don't expect it any time soon. I'm sorry that ruins the game for you!

Valorant gets the League of Legends treatment

LoL has been around for over 10 years and it’s no doubt Riot Games’ proudest achievement. Despite being out for more than a decade the game still limits players entirely to the region they’ve selected. By the looks of it Valorant will follow the same fate and if you’re in North America you’ll only play with people who are also in North America. The same goes for Europe or any of the other available regions. There’s another meaning to crossplay and that’d be across different platforms. In the beginning Riot revealed that their main focus will be PC users. Considering that Valorant aims to be a highly competitive game it’ll be nearly impossible to put it out on a console. Imagine playing CS:GO on a controller, there won’t be enough precision in your actions.

Other games and crossplay

Some of the other titans in the industry have a different approach to crossplay. Valve, for instance, are rather liberal when it comes to Dota 2 and allows players to look for matches from every region they desire. The cost of that would be higher ping, but if your connection is good enough it won’t be that noticeable. This effectively allows players from Europe to easily play in NA and vice versa.

Whether Valorant will bring the same option when the game comes out in the summer is all up to Riot. Stay tuned for more Valorant news and make sure to check out EarlyGame for everything gaming and esports.
