The self-proclaimed “ultimate competitive miniatures game” comes to the digital world with the brand-new title Warhammer Underworlds: Online. Let’s have a look.
Warhammer Underworlds, the miniatures skirmish game based in Games Workshop’s Age of Sigmar setting is going digital. The title’s Steam page has an Early Access release date of January 28 while the official launch for the completed game is not yet specified.
The studio behind the digital cards-and-dice battle game is newcomer Steel Sky Games based off Melbourne, Australia. The project was announced via an in-engine teaser depicting the iconic warband Steelheart’s Champions braving the ominous and ghastly ruined city of Shadespire, also known as the Mirrored City:
Though admittedly the teaser was a little short and the animations of the Stormcast warriors looked a bit choppy, another gameplay-oriented trailer followed soon:
In the second video, we see tons of action with Warriors of Chaos making an appearance, dice and cards being flung around and an overall cool atmosphere. From what we currently know, the digital version of Warhammer Underworlds will be an extremely faithful adaptation of the hit tabletop game.
The developers promise deep strategic options with integrated deckbuilding mechanics and cool combat with the digital card and dice roller. According to the devs, new card options will be granted to the players for free on a regular basis, and additional warbands will be available for purchase via microtransactions.
That being said, we still have tons of questions that need answering! Will we see all 20 currently released Warbands for the game inside the Online adaptation? Can we expect exclusive new characters? Will there be a single-player story campaign? We are promised deckbuilding, but how many of the hundreds of cards will make it to the digital battlefield?
Steel Sky Games have an active YouTube channel where they publish gameplay streams and updates, so hopefully, all these answers are coming soon.
Excited about Warhammer Underworlds’ digital reincarnation? Let us know. As the game gets into Early Access, we will surely bring you more answers as to what the adaptation will bring, so stay tuned.
