The detective RPG game Disco Elysium is this year’s big winner at The Game Awards, with wins in four categories.
Last week, The Game Awards 2019 honored the best video game titles of the year and despite the presence of favorites like Death Stranding and Apex Legends, the recent cop/detective title, released this October, got recognized in four categories, for Best Roleplaying Game, Best Narrative, Best Independent Game, and Fresh Indie Game.
The award for best narrative is hardly a surprise, as the game has been universally praised for its story. In this category, it managed to beat A Plague Tale: Innocence, Control, Death Stranding, and another big favorite in this category, Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds.
In the Best RPG category, Disco Elysium faced the competition of Final Fantasy XIV, Kingdom Hearts III, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, and (again) The Outer Worlds.
So, what’s so cool about the game? Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, you should know what the game is, but still let’s get you covered real quick.
Disco Elysium puts you in the role of a detective, Harry DuBois, in the impoverished district of Martinaise, part of the fictional city of Revachol. Your character has lost his memory and goes around the district talking to people in an attempt to both recover his identity and solve a murder. The game features an open world shown from an isometric perspective and relies heavily on a brilliantly written dialogue.
Dubbed “the cop”, your character’s abilities are defined via a unique and sophisticated skill system that presents you with countless choices. Another thing that really makes the game stand out is how real all non-player characters feel, thanks to the groundbreaking dialogue system.
A nice touch, that allows you to further develop your character, is the so called Thought Cabinet, which gives you a chance to enter the mind of your cop.
If you still haven’t tried this breath of fresh air to the RPG genre, you already got several reasons to correct that mistake. And as always, stay tuned for more hidden and not so hidden gems to discover.
