Gargoyles is being turned into a live action show, but we think that it'll be even darker and scarier than the original series, thanks to horror movie icon Gary Dauberman leading the project.
If you grew up in the 90s (can't relate) then you'll probably have heard of the Disney cartoon Gargoyles, right? Well, if you're in the mood for something dark and supernatural, then we might just have some good news for you!
The hit 90s show Gargoyles is making its way back to everyone's screens, only this time the cartoon show is being turned into a live action show for Disney+ by none other than Gary Dauberman and James Wan's company Atomic Monster.
Gargoyles On Disney+
According to an exclusive story from The Hollywood Reporter, Gary Dauberman and James Wan's Atomic Monster are teaming up to turn the iconic 90s TV show Gargoyles into a live action series, after many rumors of other productions over the years.
Gary Dauberman, the man famous for writing many popular horror movies such as Annabelle, The Nun and It Chapter Two, will write, executive produce and showrun the new Gargoyles show for Disney+. Atomic Monster, James Wan's company, will executive produce the show.
As Gary Dauberman is best known for his horrific works, we can expect the show to take on an even darker and spookier theme than the original show had. It probably won't be suited for children, but that definitely opens up the doors for new plot lines! With Gary Dauberman and Atomic Monster working on the project, it's sure to turn into a hit, even if it strays from the tonality of the original series.
Disney Branded Television has announced the Gargoyles live action show as being in early development, so it will probably take at least a year until the first season comes out.
But, according to Variety, it seems like the live action show could have a bit of a different plot line than the cartoon show.
Gargoyles Plot
Gargoyles was an animated TV series that went on for three seasons, from 1994 to 1997. The show was one of the first animated series that decided to tackle a darker plot, just as, for example, Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men did at that time.
The show's plot built on the premise that there's a supernatural species of creatures known as gargoyles that swore to protect humans. Gargoyle's premise is summed up pretty well in the show's opener:
One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age of gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night, We were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we live again! We are defenders of the night! We are gargoyles!
After 1000 years the gargoyles are freed from their curse and while they try to adjust to the modern New York City, they also work together the police officer Elisa Maza to protect themselves and the city from supernatural threats.
If you want a blast from the past, here's the opening theme of the original Gargoyles show:
While you'd think that the new gargoyles live action would take on the same base plot line, just with some darker twists and turns thanks to Gary Dauberman, it seems as though there might be bigger changes ahead.
According to Variety, the logline for the show reads:
Based on the cult classic Disney animated series, Goliath is the last of a heroic race of gargoyle warriors who once lived among mankind. Free from a centuries long curse that turned him into stone, Goliath struggles to solve the mystery of his past while watching over modern-day New York City alongside police detective Elisa Maza.
So, does this mean that all other Gargoyles have been killed and won't return for the live action series? Is Disney deciding to cut the other Gargoyles to save on production costs, or is this plot change solely for the purpose of darkening Goliath's past?
Whether this plot point will actually make it to the final stage of production is unclear at the moment, but it does make us question how the show will compare to the original.
Either way, are you excited to see the 90s make another comeback? Stay tuned to find out more about the show, once more news come out!
