The director of the last Harry Potter movies and all the Fantastic Beasts movies, David Yates, has recently given us a bit more clarity about Fantastic Beasts 4. It seems as though Warner Bros haven't called it quits on the spin-off movies of the Harry Potter franchise, but can we expect more information in the near future?
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore came out in 2022, but ever since then Warner Bros. has been eerily silent considering the production of Fantastic Beasts 4. That is, until recently. The director of all three Fantastic Beasts movies, David Yates, gave us a bit more clarity as to whether or not we'll ever see Fantastic Beasts 4 on our screens. Spoilers: it looks like we will. Eventually.
The Fantastic Beasts Franchise Is "Parked"
Ever since Fantastic Beasts 3 was released, we haven't really heard much, or anything at all, from the cast, director or even Warner Bros. Luckily, one person finally broke the silence and gave us a bit more insight into the current situation of the Fantastic Beasts franchise. In an interview with Total Film magazine, David Yates revealed that the entire Fantastic Beasts franchise is "parked" currently.
It seems as though there are no talks at the moment about producing Fantastic Beasts 4 in the near future, whether with Warner Bros or the producer David Heyman, at least not from David Yates side.
Obviously, the status of "parked" seems odd at first, since the Wizarding World franchise is quite big, right? Well, even though the Fantastic Beasts movies belong to the Harry Potter franchise, these movies never did as well in theaters as the Harry Potter movies did.
Here's how much the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies made in the worldwide box office, according to "The Numbers"
Movie | Worldwide Box Office Earnings |
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II | $1,313,548,963 |
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone | $963,667,273 |
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I | $951,032,438 |
Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix | $939,619,849 |
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince | $929,411,069 |
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire | $886,742,787 |
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets | $874,954,228 |
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them | $811,724,385 |
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban | $784,206,372 |
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald | $648,455,339 |
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore | $404,560,145 |
It's obvious that the spin-off franchise never performed as well as the Harry Potter movies did, yet the rapid decline of box office earnings with each new Fantastic Beasts movie surely wasn't a good sign for Warner Bros.
It's possible that Warner Bros have other projects that they are prioritizing currently and would rather produce before they head back to the Wizarding World. Perhaps they're even trying to build up more hype for the franchise by letting it lay still for this long, so fans will swarm into theaters again when Fantastic Beasts 4 finally comes out.
The fact that the franchise is parked can be taken as a good sign, though, since it doesn't seem like the series will be canceled altogether, it just might take some time until the final two movies are produced.
Of course, at the moment, there is no official release date for Fantastic Beasts 4, as the franchise is parked right now, but if we ever hear any news about the franchise, we'll make sure to keep you updated!
What Happened In Fantastic Beasts 1–3?
Should we even care about whether we'll ever see Fantastic Beasts 4&5? Definitely. There's still a bunch of plot and questions left to uncover, but before we get into our what the next movies will be about, how about a short recap since it's been quite a while?
Over the last years, ever since Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them came out in 2016, we've been following Newt Scamander, Tina and Queenie Goldstein and Jacob Kowalski along during their adventures throughout the Wizarding World back in the 1920s.Since the movies were created as a prequel to the Harry Potter movies, important characters such as Dumbledore and Grindelwald not only make their appearances in the Fantastic Beasts movies, but they have their own story arcs as well!
The last movie, Fantastic Beasts 3, was all about Dumbledore and his "army" of Newt Scamander and his friends, as they attempted to halt Gellert Grindelwald from becoming the Wizarding World's Supreme Leader and starting a war against the Muggle world.Though Dumbledore and Newt were successful in stopping Grindelwald from becoming the Supreme Leader, Grindelwald disappears at the end of the movie and leaves the Muggle world yet again in danger. While the ending may seem like it's acceptable as a finale, back when the first Fantastic Beasts' movie was released, Warner Bros. announced that there would be 5 movies in total, which leaves 2 more to come.
Fantastic Beasts 4: How The Story Might Continue
We may not know yet if and when Fantastic Beasts 4 will release, but we can at least guess as to what magical storytelling awaits us! From what we know so far, the entire Fantastic Beasts series is set during the Global Wizarding War, which takes place from 1920 (that's when the first movie took place) to 1945. We left off in 1932, so that leaves us 13 years of plot.
Sadly, as there are no books that the Fantastic Beasts movies are created after, we don't exactly know what will happen in Fantastic Beasts 4. But, based off of official information from the Harry Potter books and what J. K. Rowling has already revealed, we can take some guesses.
As we already know thanks to the Harry Potter movies, Dumbledore eventually manages to put a stop to Grindelwald's plans and defeats him. I'd take a wild guess that this plot point was originally left for the final movie in the series.
But, it isn't too unlikely that we would see Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 4 and watch on as Newt and his friends attempt to stop Grindelwald from attacking the Muggle world once again.
At the end of Fantastic Beasts 3, when Jacob and Queenie get married, Newt is excited to see Tina there again. We have yet to see their relationship properly blossom, so that's something that we can look forward to!
Once we find out more about Fantastic Beasts 4, we'll definitely keep you updated!
