Gangs of New York: Everything We Know About Martin Scorsese's New Series

Gangs of New York was a 2002 film from Martin Scorsese that featured Leonardo DiCaprio. It was based on a book from 1927 that detailed the criminal underworld of 19th Century New York. Now, Scorsese is planning to adapt the book once again, only this time for TV.

When you think of crime and New York City, you imagine the Italian Mafia during prohibition or possibly the crack epidemic of the 80s. But New York has been a hive of scum and villainy since its founding, and (as Peaky Blinders has proven) audiences are hungry for those crime stories from earlier periods in history. It's no wonder then that a TV adaption of Gangs of New York is on the way. Here is everything we know so far.

Note: There was a separate TV adaption being planned for Gangs of New York back in 2013, but that project has since been abandoned.

Gangs of New York Release Window

We don't have an official release date for Gangs of New York, and given that the only substantive reporting on this project so far comes from a 2022 piece in Deadline, we expect the show will be released in 2025 at the very earliest. A period drama with Scorsese at the helm will no doubt be an expensive and time-consuming endeavor.

Gangs of New York Plot

While we don't have confirmation that this TV show will follow the same story as the 2002 movie adaption, we are fairly sure it will hit the same beats. Here is a brief overview:

Amsterdam Vallon (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) returns to the Five Points district in New York seeking vengeance for his father's murder at the hands of nativist gang leader Bill "The Butcher" Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis). Amsterdam infiltrates Bill's gang and befriends him, all while tensions between Irish immigrants and nativists escalate. At the end of the movie, Amsterdam kills Bill with his father's knife.

The show might easily go in a new direction, but we think it's far more likely we return to this same conflict between Irish immigrants and nativists in the heart of 19th Century New York. We will of course update this article as soon as we have anything more official.
