Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is officially in production, with director James Gunn revealing the film's first-ever cast photo.
It looks like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has finally begun production, according to director James Gunn, who shared the film's very first cast photo on Twitter. Not only do we have a first-look at the new film, but the confirmation that one particular actor has joined the cast for an as-of-yet-unknown new role.
Taking to Twitter, James Gunn said that "It's been a strange & long & at times challenging journey to get here, but the obstacles along the way have only made this moment more blissful. Back on set with my Guardians family for the first day of shooting #gotgvol3". Well, it looks like the band are back together. Could we be up for more 80s-style fun?
Gunn revealed that Nigerian-British actor, Chukwudi Iwuji, has joined the cast. You will recognize him John Wick 2, Doctor Who, and Designated Survivor fame, though it is unknown who he will play in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It's an exciting addition to the already strong cast, which will again feature the likes of Chris Pratt and Karen Gillan.
In addition to Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter was recently cast as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Poulter is known for his role in 2010's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Maze Runner, and 2015's The Revenant. He will be playing Adam Warlock, whom is a perfect Sovereign in the Guardians of the Galaxy Comic Books.
Sovereigns were created by Ayesha to destroy the Guardians of the Galaxy, following the Battle on Ego's Planet. After her defeat in the battle, Ayesha was scared that she would be punished, and thus created a being whom she believed would be capable of taking on the Guardians. She named this particular being Adam, though we do not yet know what role this character will play in the James Gunn's third film.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the follow up to 2017's Vol. 2, as well as Avengers: Endgame in 2019, in which the Guardians joined forces with various other members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to take on Thanos. After their success in the latter-mentioned film, they have not featured in a Marvel film.
When is the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Release Date?
Whilst the film could easily be delayed, we can pretty much confirm that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will release on May 23, 2023. It may seem like a long way away, and it is, with the film ending up with a release date six full years after Volume 2. The first two Guardians of the Galaxy films came out on August 28, 2014 and April 27, 2017 respectively.
