Netflix is tired of all of us sharing our accounts with our family and acquaintaces, so now they will double-down on account sharing.
Netflix account sharing is so simple, that people share their accounts with everybody. Seriously, getting a Netflix account is easier than getting a callback, and Netflix knows it. In fact, Netflix knew about it all along, but now the're tired of being Mr. Friendly and will double down on account sharing.
Netflix Account Sharing Crackdown
Netflix is officially threatening users that they will take down accounts that share their password with family and friends outside of the household. Apparently, new password features will make this process automatic, and I gotta say: As someone who's using his girlfriend's sister's account from Vienna to watch Netflix in Mexico, I'm worried.
Netflix will initially roll out these changes in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru, prompting viewers to buy a discounted package to share with users outside of the household. Also, it will be possible to transfer your viewing history and recommendations into a new 'Extra Member' account.
We've always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans," Long said in a blog post. "While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared.
A bold move by Netflix, which, unsurprisngly has already got Twitter trending with people threatening to cancel their subscription. To be fair, with so many streaming services available, why stay? But, then again, to be even fairer, can we really blame Netflix for taking these steps? I mean, again, I am literally using a Vienna account in Mexico. I can't blame Netflix for wanting to get their money's worth...
