Netflix is adapting Avatar: The Last Airbender as a live-action series. And now, after revealing the cast, we've got a first teaser!
We're getting a new Avatar game, we're getting new Avatar movies... what's going on? This is heaven. Avatar has forever been one of the most underused IPs, with a universe that's begging to be explored further, and now it's all happening all at once. Plus, everybody should be happy: Gamers get a game, animation purists get new movies and live-action fans get another run at Avatar thanks to Netflix - who have now revealed the cast for their live-action Avatar The Last Airbender series.
And now we've finally got a teaser and planned release!
Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender Teaser And Release
At Netflix's Tudum (basically a showcase for the future of Netflix) a short trailer for Avatar was revealed. We see the symbols of all four elements and we heard the sounds of cracking ice, trembling earth, a crackling fire and howling wind. All accompanied by faster and faster beating drums and a mystical sound.

Though it doesn't reveal much, it does give us a release window. They plan to release the show in 2024 after being in the works since 2018. The original Avatar creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were on board as executive producers but parted ways in 2020 with the Netflix production. But the showrunner, Albert Kim said he wanted to stay authentic.
We’ll be expanding and growing the world, and there will be surprises for existing fans and those new to the tale. But throughout this process, our byword has been 'authenticity.' To the story. To the characters. To the cultural influences. Authenticity is what keeps us going, both in front of the camera and behind it, which is why we’ve assembled a team unlike any seen before — a group of talented and passionate artists who are working around the clock to bring this rich and incredibly beautiful world to life.
So we can be curious what surprises to expect (I'm hoping for Zutara, don't judge), and we won't have to wait for too long anymore. Also, we're getting the full animated film in 2025!
Cast for Netflix's Avatar Series Revealed
The biggest of the new reveals is George Takei joining the cast to lend his voice to Koh. This is interesting, since it implies Koh might play a bigger role than he did in the anime - why else hire such a high profile actor for a minor role?
