Peter Dinklage: “You’re Still Making That F***ing Backwards Story?”

Disney is working on a new Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs movie, and Peter Dinklage isn't the biggest fan... yet.

Disney is re-telling Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, Peter Dinklage made it clear that he isn’t happy about it. Why? Well, because, on the one hand, Disney was super proud to announce that this Snow White would be played by a Latina, while on the other… this Latina Snow White is still surrounded by the same old seven dwarfs and their stereotypes.

I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. You're still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you're doing there. It makes no sense to me.

While Rachel Zegler being Snow White is progressive and admirable, Peter Dinklage isn’t wrong when stating that dwarfs living in a cave is exactly the opposite:

You're progressive in one way and you're still making that f*cking backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together. What the f*ck are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I'm not loud enough. If you tell the story of Snow White with the most f*cked up, progressive spin on it? Let's do it. All in.

He suggests that the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is due an update, since it was originally released in 1937. You know… back before World War 2, and before black people were allowed to sit in the front of buses, before gay people had any rights to speak of, and back when women doing housework wasn’t a stereotype but rather mandatory. Yeah… I can see where he’s coming from. We’ve come a long way since. In fact, it’s almost been a century, and some things just don’t stand the test of time.

Well, it did turn out that Peter Dinklage apparently was loud enough, or at least Disney heard him loud and clear, because they released a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, that has us intrigued:

To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.

Outside of Rachel Zegler being cast as Snow White and the above statement from Disney, we don’t really know much about the new Snow White movie, except that it’s directed by Marc Webb and produced by Marc Platt.
