With the departure of Justin Roiland, Rick and Morty is in dire need of some new voice actors to bolster the cast.
Many core members of Rick and Morty will be recast with new voice actors with the departure of Justin Roiland following his arrest for domestic assault.
On January 12, 2023, NBC reported the arrest of Roiland in Orange County on the charge of domestic battery with corporal injury, as well as false imprisonment. Even though all the charges have been dismissed due to insufficient evidence, Adult Swim cut all ties with Roiland, which means he won't return to the show.
- If you need to bridge the gap until the new season of Rick and Morty releases, Amazon Prime Video has a wide variety of shows you might enjoy.
With Roiland no longer being involved in the show, Rick Sanchez, Morty Smith and many other characters will need new voice actors.
Adult Swim President Addresses Recasting For Rick and Morty
In an Interview with Premiere, Adult Swim channel president Michael Ouweleen and Rick and Morty executive producer Steve Levy talked about how they were planning to handle the situation going forward, confirming that Roiland “will be replaced in dubbing”.
They don't plan to try to imitate Roiland's portrayal of the titular characters, though, as he explains, “No, not imitators… In any case the idea is that we feel that they are the same characters.”

Ouweleen then tries to shift the focus a little bit, detailing how “The voices are obviously a big part, but there is also the writing of the characters, their design… I have reason to believe that the transition will go well.”
Levy also chimed in, explaining how “The writing quality has never been better, and all the screenwriters have stayed. I don’t think anyone will bat an eyelid, hearing the new voices.”
And this confirms that both Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith will sound a lot different in future seasons. Ouweleen and Levy do their best in assuring fans that the overall quality of the show won't drop, but it might still take some time for people to get used to the new voices.
