Disney's Snow White live action movie is facing backlash by none other than the original movies' director's son! Wild...
Snow White is a story that was told before Walt Disney ever graced us with some of the most iconic movies that definitely were a key part of a lot of people's childhood. Now, the son of the director of the original film adaptation of this story claims that the new live action movie is a “disgrace”, and that Walt “would be turning in [his] grave”.
In the original telling of Snow White, a princess with skin as white as snow, flees her jealous stepmother who wishes for her death. She finds refuge with seven dwarfs in the forest. Deceived by the stepmother's disguises and poisoned apple, Snow White falls into a death-like sleep, revived only by a prince's kiss.
Snow White Faces Backlash Because Of Controversial Changes
It is nothing new that Disney is currently working on expanding their movie library with a bunch of live action adaptations of some of their most iconic stories.
The problem is, these recreations of the classic stories have generated a lot of backlash, because of changes they applied to the source material.
Recently, the Snow White movie has been criticized for their changes to the portrayal of the seven dwarves, and even the 91-year-old son of the director of the original movie got involved.
In an Interview with The Telegraph, David Hand, son of the director for the original Snow White movie by Disney, mentioned how he feels about the new live action adaptation starring Rachel Zegler.
It’s a whole different concept and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it,
I guess, you could argue that he is not a fan of the new direction Disney has taken with their newest movies, as Hand continues his rant.
They’re making up new woke things, and I’m just not into any of that. I find it quite frankly a bit insulting [what] they may have done with some of these classic films
Maybe Hand should consider that only because they're retelling the story of Snow White, that doesn't mean that the 1937 movie directed by his father will be overwritten. Otherwise, they would have overwritten the original telling by the Grimm brothers with their movie, and what a shame that would have been!
The 91-year-old doesn't stop there, though, as he even gets poor old Walt Disney involved by claiming that “there’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did. … I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves”.
Again, it seems like Hand tries and take credit for the story of Snow White, when Walt Disney (who produced some rather controversial movies himself) adapted and changed the story for his original movie himself!
The movie is scheduled for March 22, 2024, so we'll have to wait and see whether this adaptation will be a “disgrace” as Hand claims. If the movie turns out to be bad, that's one thing (Disney doesn't have the best track record with their live action adaptations), but not even giving it a chance is another.
