Netflix's track record of continuing shows hasn't been the greatest, historically. With fans eagerly awaiting season 3 of Mindhunter, director David Fincher had to talk business at some point. Here's what's up.
Mindhunter is undeniably one of the greatest shows on Netflix. It basically has everything: an amazing cast, great characters, thrill for days and a high production value. Mindhunter hits the sweet spot with by using many people's morbid curiosity to try and understand humanity's worst: serial killers.
Trying to understand how the hell Mindhunter of all series on Netflix was the one to be cast aside has been an emotional rollercoaster for years at this point. It took years until the platform finally had mercy on fans and let them off the hook: Mindhunter wouldn't continue for a third season.
Mindhunter's Director David Fincher Clears Things Up
Mindhunter's untimely end has been a heavy hit for fans and as we all know, the healthiest way to cope with the loss of a show is finding someone to blame.
For the longest time, that had been director David Fincher himself according to Netflix. As he had a pretty busy schedule and was occupied with other projects, they had to put Mindhunter on hold for years until they officially killed it off in February 2023.
Fincher apparently has a different view on how things went, though. In an interview with French Le Journal du Dimanche, he shared his version of the sad end of Mindhunter, even though he didn't seem as heartbroken as the fans he left with the unfinished show:
I'm very proud of the first two seasons. But it's a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn't attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment.
Fincher also talked about that he doesn't blame them for the decision and seemed excited about his other projects Mank and The Killer. Good for him that he's not as heartbroken about Mindhunter's fate of rotting on Netflix's pile of cancelled shows as the fans.
Whoever you want to blame in the end – Netflix or Fincher – the outcome remains the same. Mindhunter's dead.
