The FIFA Evolution: From FIFA 93 To FIFA 23

1-30

From nostalgia to sweaty, everything is in here

Alex Frieling Alex Frieling
FIFA - October 14th 2022, 17:20 GMT+2

FIFA International Soccer / FIFA 93

That was the first part of FIFA. Here, too, FIFA has already been released by the manufacturer EA. It came first for the Sega Mega Drive and the PC. But then also for Game Boy, Nintendo or the 3DO, among others. There were already teams here (mainly national teams), but no special player names as we know it today. That means that the players on the pitch were all on the same level and without names. If you look at the picture, the difference is really crazy, especially when you have FIFA 21 in mind. So let's see how it went on ... | © EA Sports

FIFA Soccer 95

Here we have the year in the name for the first time. It was released in 1994 when more club teams and international leagues were added as updates. You notice: EA is slowly learning to continuously develop the game. Although all players here still have fictional names. There are now also penalty shoot-outs in the game. It is progressing. | © EA Sports

FIFA Soccer 96

FIFA Soccer 96

In this year, FIFA was released for the PlayStation. 3D features are included in the game, the graphics have been minimally improved for the first time. The first step of many when it comes to graphics. And as you know, some more should follow. Transfers, new player names and positions are absolutely new in FIFA Soccer 96. What does the next version look like? | © EA Sports

Fifa 97 TEST

FIFA 97

Finally, we have the "normal" FIFA title. What else is different? An indoor mode is newly integrated in the game. The first online mode is already available, and the commentator was allowed to come up with new sayings. So the first beginnings in the direction of sweaty online modes. And it should get better ... | © EA Sports

FIFA 98

Road to World Cup: As the title suggests, everything here is dedicated to the World Cup. An extra World Cup mode with 172 (!) different nations is a hard upgrade. What else? The design was geared towards the World Cup. And these nice retro jerseys in the picture are a real eye-catcher, aren't they? | © EA Sports

The Updates: improved graphics (the players are now different sizes) and no more indoor mode. In FIFA 99, there were only minor upgrades. But we know that. Sometimes you just don't see a difference. | © EA Sports

Galerie FIFA2000

FIFA 2000

More teams and leagues are playable in FIFA 2000. The MLS is also new. The graphics continue to take small steps, so the first facial expressions can now be seen. But you really have to look for that. | © EA Sports

Fifa 2001

FIFA 2001

Yes, FIFA 2001 and not FIFA 01. The change in the title will come later. You can now see that the graphics are really getting better. The light has been significantly improved, so shadows can already be seen on the players. Sounds kind of ridiculous from today's perspective. The online mode is getting closer to an actual multiplayer mode. | © EA Sports

Galerie FIFA Soccer2002

FIFA Football 2002

It's getting more and more demanding. Passing aids become weaker, and the strength of passes and shots must be better adjusted by the gamer in front of the console. | © EA Sports

Galerie FIFA Football2003

FIFA Football 2003

I think you can see huge differences from the beginning. As far as fans, lights, jerseys (with sponsors) etc. are all getting better, big steps can be seen. The cover also changes from year to year. FIFA is growing, that can be seen in FIFA Football 2003. | © EA Sports

Lower leagues, such as the 2nd Bundesliga, are now also included. In general, the game becomes more and more detailed. Passes can be controlled more precisely, the goals are noticeably better played out. FIFA is also slowly becoming real football. | © EA Sports

FIFA Football 2005

Graphical changes here too and the gameplay is evolving. What else? The career mode is becoming more popular. And with the next FIFA, there will be an audible difference ... | © EA Sports

Galerie FIFA06

FIFA 06

Yeah, that's what I meant by an audible difference. You say to your buddy, "Do you want to play another round of FIFA 06 with me?". There are no more shooting aids available. Means: you have to get better with the controller. The manager mode is also revised annually. Of course, FIFA 06 is being played a lot on the Xbox 360 and PS2. | © EA Sports

FIFA 07

FIFA 07

Ronaldinho is the face of FIFA 07. I loved him. Not only the way he played football, but also virtually. It's fascinating to see how the graphics are constantly improving ... | © EA Sports

FIFA 08 Kicker

FIFA 08

What a legendary cover, right? The legendary striker Miroslav Klose and Ronaldinho himself. It doesn't get much cooler than these two. I know how you guys feel, but for me, these versions are pure nostalgia right now. And CR7 is also in the game, as you can see. Of course, there is still room for improvement in terms of graphics ... | © kicker

FIFA 09

FIFA 09

Hitting the bar has become more noticeable in FIFA 09. Otherwise, the pace will also get stronger and stronger. The beginning of a terrible meta. Just saying. Online modes are now getting bigger and bigger, 20 players can play against each other at the same time (everyone gets one field player). | © EA Sports

FIFA 10

FIFA 10

In FIFA 10 you were able to create your own player for the first time. I remember doing that right away. Back then, it was just a fun, new feature. Oh yes, and do you see the way Lampard runs? Simply legendary. And above all, just as close as the real run-up to the English legend. FIFA gets more detailed. | © EA Sports

FIFA 11

FIFA 11

Online games with 22 players at the same time are already possible here. The GK position was also filled. Otherwise, as I said: Legendary versions that we are just getting to see. For me at least. | © EA Sports

FIFA 12

FIFA 12

Defense becomes more important in FIFA 12. Fouls and tackling are seen more often in FIFA 12 and the graphics just keep getting better. Sorry that I couldn't stop being amazed, but for me, this era of FIFA 10-14 was absolutely legendary! Ok, I'll stop raving now ... | © EA Sports

FIFA 13

FIFA 13

The last FIFA before PS4 and Xbox One! And it was such a strong end. Really insane. The player AI has just gotten much stronger here, much more intelligent. Thus, the offensive and defensive game became noticeably more pleasant and realistic. | © EA Sports

FIFA 14

FIFA 14

PS4, Xbox One, here we come! Anyone who has witnessed the change of consoles in FIFA knows what a huge difference it was. In terms of graphics, gameplay, but also camera perspectives and atmosphere, FIFA has easily turned another 180 degrees. | © EA Sports

FIFA 15

FIFA 15

Now, FIFA is really close to real football. In this picture, you can already see the Premier League design. EA becomes more obsessed with details, the game not only becomes more realistic, but also more successful. Lionel Messi is on the cover of FIFA. | © EA Sports

FIFA 16

FIFA 16

In this picture, you can see how good the graphics are now. Skills, for example, are becoming much more important. Ultimate Team is now the biggest mode in the game. Everything that we know of modes in FIFA 21 is already there. | © EA Sports

FIFA 17

FIFA 17

The graphics are getting heavier. So is the gameplay. In FIFA 17, I was completely hyped about Ultimate Team. You have to honestly say that EA has done a lot right in that time, the success speaks for itself © EA Sports

FIFA 18 Gameplay

FIFA 18

Think back 10 or 20 years ... what a huge difference. In FIFA 18, there was also the World Cup mode in Ultimate Team. By the way, FUT Draft was also a mode that was played up and down. Like by myself. | © EA Sports

FIFA 19

FIFA 19

FIFA 19 was the weakest of the last versions. I didn't like the gameplay here at all. But that's how many others see it with FIFA 20 ... | © EA Sports

FIFA 20

FIFA 20

This one was more or less the Corona-FIFA. During the lockdown, I played FIFA 20 every day. On the other hand, you have to say that the gameplay was really questionable. Everything was aimed at weak foot, the drag back was completely insane in that context. Controversial FIFA, definitely ... | © EA Sports

FIFA 21

FIFA 21

FIFA 21 brought more Volta options – lame. In general, it was solid in my opinion. | © EA Sports

FIFA 22

FIFA 22

FIFA 22 introduced a few new things to FUT, like the FUT Heroes. But apart from that, not really much happened. Not the biggest disappointment, but surely not the best game we had. | © EA Sports

Havertz FIFA 23 jpg

FIFA 23

It's finally here. The last ever FIFA game developed by EA Sports. As you can see, this game ends a 30-year-long series and will be replaced by two new games, the one from EA being called EA Sports FC and another one from the FIFA. We unfortunately don't know that much about the new games yet. | © EA Sports

1-30

With FIFA 23, the last game of the series was released. Let's take a look at the developments FIFA has taken over the years. If you just look at the pictures, you can see huge differences. Because, especially in terms of graphics and gameplay, the changes are remarkable.

Online modes existed much earlier than expected, but there were also versions with hardly any updates. We look at all FIFA parts: From FIFA 93 (yes, it really existed) to FIFA 23 - an impressive development!
