How Do Esports Work?

Esports are video games involving players competing against themselves. The better of the two usually emerge as the best player and champion. While the number of players could be more, the rules remain the same.

Common Types of Esports Games

There are different types of esports games but some are more popular than others. They include:

  • CS:GO
  • League of Legends
  • Fortnite
  • Rainbow Six Siege
  • Dota 2
  • Call of Duty

Overall, there are four main types of Esport games and each is completely different from the other. Let’s discuss them below, shall we?

1. Player vs. Player

Also called PVP, this game is just as the name suggests. Here, one or more human players will play against one or more human opponents. The game Mortal Kombat is an example of this. The game features two players of opposing characters who fight each other on the screen. Another example of PVP is playing a console game with a friend at home.

2. Real-time Strategy

RTS is a variation of PVP and like the latter, it features two players, but the difference is that in this game, both players will play a game of strategy. Examples of RTSs include StarCraft and Warcraft. In this type of game, both players are given the same resources to start with but will have to develop a strong empire to defeat their enemy.

The number of players can be anywhere between two and eight players, however, only the best player wins.

3. FPS

First-person shooter is perhaps the most popular esports game at the moment. It requires one player to lead a character in a single game. The most popular games in FPS include CS:GO, Call of Duty, and so on. Overall, the player views the virtual world from the character's point of view.

It also involves only two players competing against each other, with one emerging as the winner. FPS games are quite appealing and are ideal for amateurs and experts alike. Players can choose from a variety of maps and weapons, making it even more appealing.

4. Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA)

Abbreviated as MOBA, the game is a variation of real-time strategy. It involves a team of players going against each other, with the assignment to defend a map or level, and defeat the rival to win the game.

The most popular MOBA games include Heroes of the Storm, League of Legends, and so on. one advantage this game has over others is that team players must cooperate to get the best game required to win.

Esports Tournaments

While there are single games, there are also tournaments. It is just as the name suggests. It involves hundreds of players competing against each other after which one winner will emerge. Tournaments usually feature large betting, hence whoever wins will take home a huge sum of money. While most games can be played in esports tournaments, some are excluded including League of Legends, Dota 2, CS:GO, and so on.According to Geek Insider, in esports, the best players are likened to celebrities.
