Will Diablo 2: Resurrected do the unthinkable and let players port over their old save files from 20 years ago? We have answers for you Diablo 2 fans, so let get into the details!

In a recent interview with Diablo 2: Resurrected producer, Matthew Cederquist, a small but insane detail was confirmed.

Yes! Keep your old save files. Back when we were working on [the D2 remasater], we wondered if the old save files would work, so we kind of shoved it in, and it worked! So yes, your local singleplayer save files will carry over. We were like, ‘okay, that’s the best feature ever'.

Okay, deep breath D2 fans. This news is huge! It looks like it will only be for “local singleplayer save files” which we believe to mean not your multiplayer characters. Only the characters made in single-player offline mode can be ported over. A massive difference as access to the best items is much harder to find in single-player mode.

Is Diablo 2: Resurrected a Hard Reset?

  • Short answer: No!

If you were hoping for D2: Resurrected to be a hard reset that tossed out all progress made in the original game, then your sadly incorrect. It appears that you can start farming Mephisto and Baal right now in single-player and port over all your progress to Diablo 2: Remastered.

Depending on what you think, this is either totally poggers or flaming trash. On the one hand, you can now play your 99 Smite-a-din in HD. But on the other hand, many people may think that a fresh experience without old progress would be much better.

What About my Diablo 2 Multiplayer Characters?

Multiplayer characters were not mentioned in the interview, so their fate is still up in the air. Blizzard could announce at a later date that you can also port over your old multiplayer characters, but this remains unknown. So, your Level 99 1000 MF Forst Orb Sorceress, might be able to continue to farm the Ancient Tunnels in full 4k!

This is not the end of the world for those hoping for a fresh start. Remember, most of D2 multiplayer is played in seasons that reset automatically. That means the race to the top of the experience ladder can once again begin in Diablo 2: Resurrected.
