Donkey Kong mania! Fans of the franchise have every reason to be excited. At first, rumors swirled that a new Donkey Kong game is in development. Now the rumor mill starts swinging faster as Nintendo is looking to make Donkey Kong its new worldwide sensation.

Nintendo have mastered the craft of creating mega-franchises. Is there a single person in the civilized world who hasn't heard of Super Mario? Well, new information suggests that there will be a new, more hairy version of Mario. No, Donkey Kong is not going to become a plumber. Nintendo actually has much bigger plans for the monkey.

Nintendo to Turn Donkey Kong into a Franchise

Apparently someone in the Nintendo office buildings suddenly remembered Donkey Kong and thought "hey, there's so much potential here!", because after being borderline abandoned by the Japanese company, DK may be back in a major way.

Please note that none of this has been officially confirmed. However, it is coming from a very reliable inside source, from which Nintendo Life learned the information we are now going to provide to you. The source, going by the alias Zippo, shared the following.

His initial leak stated that Nintendo has entered development of a new game for the Donkey Kong series, which would already be great news for fans, because they haven't seen a proper DK game since 2014's Tropical Freeze. Nintendo, however, don't plan on stopping there.

Zippo continues:

I’ve been told by multiple people that Donkey Kong is the next franchise in line to follow Mario in Nintendo’s push for their game franchises to become multimedia juggernauts.

What this means is that the gaming company is looking to turn DK into more than just a gaming series. They want to turn it into a branching franchise. According to the insider, part of the long-term plan is for Donkey Kong to "get its own animation", which could mean a myriad of things, to be fair, and an expanded theme park slot at Super Nintendo World.

The source has been reliable in the past, so we can trust this leak as much as any. What all of that means is that we are likely to be seeing a lot more Donkey Kong in the future, not just as video games on Nintendo consoles, but in other forms of entertainment as well.
