Elden Ring has been hailed by critics as being game of the year, but on Metacritic it has a user review score of 6.0 on PC right now. What's going on?
Now, before you lose your mind and start typing out an angry response - we love Elden Ring. Our very own Faris Delalic spoke movingly of the game in his review, describing it as "not just better than any Dark Souls game, but one of the best games of all time." But when we went searching for community opinions of the game, we noticed it was getting hundreds upon hundreds of terrible reviews. Which, naturally, left us pulling our hair out. What possible complaint could so many gamers have with this masterpiece?
Does Elden Ring Suck?
It seems that Elden Ring has been very badly ported to PC, and those fans are having an outsized impact on how the game is looking on "User Score" averages. This will come as some relief to console players, but it's still a real shame that a game as highly-anticipated as this has done a disservice to its PC fanbase. It's an all too familiar tale, but at least Elden Ring actually got a PC port on release, unlike Ghost of Tsushima.
Here's how one fan described the experience for PC:
There is absolutely no excuse for a game releasing in 2022 to be totally gimped like what From has done with Elden Ring on PC. The PC port is truly atrocious. No ultrawide support (in fact it appears it was intentionally removed, with multiple people saying it works, then soon after is replaced by black bars), FOV messed up, no porting over of Playstation button icons, poor performance, fps capped at 60. This was pure and simple lazy developing with the aim of making as much money as possible, while screwing over people who paid $60 expecting a competent product. Inexcusable, and 0/10
So if you've just stumbled across this, our advice is basically: buy Elden Ring for console if you want the superior experience. Plus, if this gives you an excuse to pick up a new console, you can try out some of therecent exclusives we've seen.
