Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout... how many great games do you wanna combine in one? Exekiller definitely forces you to draw comparisons to all of these great games, which... is about as big of a compliment you can get in this industry. Indie developer Paradark might have a big one on their hands.
What is Exekiller?
In a nutshell, it's an open-world FPS in a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk game that has definite Western influences. It takes place in an alternate reality of 1998, after a catastrophic fire wiped out 70% of the world's population, leaving only a couple inhabitable places on the planet that are all run by giant corporations. Sounds familiar? That's because just about every cyberpunk game is about mega-coprorations running the show. The Ascent just released with literally that as the backdrop to its story. But... that's why we love the genre, right? It reminds us of what we hate in real life.
Exekiller of course has more to offer than just a basic story backdrop: You play as a headhunter that is working for these corporations and is tasked with collecting Biochips – S.O.U.L.S. – that contain information on their owner and allow the corporations to control them. Within that setting, you are free to make your own decisions and the story will be different on each play through. Evil, good, multiple endings... you know the drill – Exekiller promises to have all of that, making several playthroughs viable. Naturally, the gameplay has multiple aspects to it too: You can be a talker, a guns-blazing headhunter or sneak around – in true RPG-fashion, the choice is yours. It's very reminiscent of Fallout in its role playing style and nature and I also smell a little Disco Elysium here... you know, just to throw another huge game in the mix. No pressure.
Honestly, Exekiller sounds almost too good to be true, when you consider that the studio consists of just two people. Yes. Two people are working on a game that I just compared to some of the greatest franchises that exist in all of gaming.
There is no release date for the game yet, but here's one thing I'm hoping Exekiller won't have in common with Cyberpunk 2077: A rushed release. I hope the two folks at Paradark take their time, because they definitely have something special on their hands here.
