I'm not usually one to get excited when a big company drops mobile games, because I'm usually the one wishing that the games would drop for PC or console. Actually... I should've used past tense in that previous sentence, because times have changed, or rather, the times changed my perception on mobile gaming: Phones are more powerful than ever, streaming services are taking over and with the shortage of consoles, it seems like mobile gaming is becoming better and better. It's no secret that most developers make much more money on mobile releases, than the console and PC versions, and Square Enix is aware of that trend: Their latest offering is going to be released for mobile systems only, and, honestly, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier might just be their most original release in years.
So, I'll retract my statement and lead in with this. I am excited as f*ck that Square Enix is dropping a mobile game.
Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier
What Is the Final Fantasy Battle Royale?
The First soldier is a battle royale in the classic sense: It's all about being the last man/squad standing. To get there, you collect upgrades, XP, equipment and battle your opponents in an ever-shrinking battlefield. The formula is tried and tested, and you are no doubt familiar with it. Of course, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier adds some new mechanics, but they're best watched, rather than read:
The many roles and approaches certainly add elements that other battle royales don't offer. While most games focus on shooting only, FF7: The First Soldier offers melee, guns, magic and summons. On paper, this sounds amazing. In practice, you won't have to wait long to find out, either:
FF 7: The First Soldier Release Date & Pre-Registration
Pre-registration will open some time this month, and the release date is already set for November 2021. There is no exact date yet, but we can live with that, since November isn't all that far away.
Will Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier Come to PC & Consoles?
No. There are no plans to bring the game to any other platform. Of course, success might make Square Enix change course, but, as of now, this is their stance on the matter:
“Lots of people want to be able to play on PC or console. We’re not at that point yet, but we hope this will bring players closer to that experience.”
Honestly, though, we all have mobile phones anyway and air-mirroring content to the big screen is easier than ever. Bringing the game to mobile is legit the way to get the most people to play it. Plus, with the Razer Kishi or any of the other Switch-like controllers, phone gaming isn't as cumbersome as it used to be.
