Ubisoft have announced a surprise Ghost Recon Battle Royale, dubbed Ghost Recon Frontline. It will be a free-to-play first-person shooter and will begin public play testing later this month.

The new Ghost Recon Frontline will focus on objective-based Battle Royale gameplay, with more than 100 players fighting it out for victory. It looks to be relatively similar to Call of Duty: Warzone, but with a twist, and set in the Tom Clancy Universe.

Announced tonight (October 5), Ghost Recon Frontline will feature a mode called Expedition, which will serve as the main way to play the game.

In Expedition, Ghost Recon Frontline players can expect to be divided into teams of three on an island map. To win the game, teams must claim three intel pieces before making their way to a drop zone and being extracted. Check out the trailer:

After the extraction helicopter is called, other players are given a notification. These players can now race to the extraction point and steal the other team's loot, claiming victory for themselves.

This new Ghost Recon Battle Royale looks like a pretty solid competitor to the likes of Warzone and Fortnite, but with the genre becoming over-saturated with competition, it will be hard for Ubisoft to really make much of a dent.

To stand out from the pack, there will be no shrinking circle in Ghost Recon Frontline, and you'll be exploring a map that is looks to be bigger than any Battle Royale map we've seen so far. There are four different biomes and twenty points of interest.

Ghost Recon Frontline also boasts a cool-looking class system, wherein you can tailor your playstyle to your loadout and characteristics. There will be classes, and the game will be highly customizable. The new TAC Support feature allows teams to call in airdrops and supplies.

There will be a number of alternative game modes, including the 9v9 Control mode, which looks more like a standard Domination or Team Deathmatch-style mode.

When is the Ghost Recon Frontline Release Date?

Whilst we have no release date for Ghost Recon Frontline, a closed test for PC will be available from October 14-21, 2021. This will be European-exclusive, though, with Ubisoft confirming that there will be future tests in the future. You can register for the test here. The game will be available on both past and current-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as well as PC and Google Stadia.
