How To Change Your PSN Name

PSN names can be as embarrassing as that email address that you created when you were 12 and thought it was incredibly cool to be named ‘Tig3rkittenRaWr’. Want to change your PSN name? Here’s how.

We know how it is. You came up with your online ID when you were a kid and now you’re all grown up and tired of all your Call of Duty buddies making fun of your ID. We’ve all been there... we understand the struggle.

And the process of changing your ID is actually rather simple.

You can either change your PSN name from your PlayStation or your web browser, but please keep in mind that you can only do this once for free. If you misspell something or realize that you don’t like your new name after all and then want to change it again, it will cost you $9.99 ($4.99 if you are subscribed to PS+). So if you do end up changing it, make sure that you change it into something that you won’t cringe about five years later.

Once changed, you have the option to display your old PSN name next to your new one for thirty days, so that all your friends know who they’re playing with (however, we fully understand if you don’t want that, xXDe5tR0yerXx).

If you do end up wanting to go back to your old ID at some point, simply contact PlayStation's customer support and they will help you out.

Here’s a detailed step-by-step on how to change your PSN username:

On the PlayStation:

  1. Go to Settings, Account Management, Account Information, Profile, and then online ID.
  2. Pick a new online ID of your choice
  3. Choose whether you want to display your old ID for 30 days or not
  4. If you changed your ID before, you now have to pay, otherwise, you’re done. Yay.

On your web browser:

  1. Sign in to your PlayStation Network Account Management and then select PSN Profile from the menu.
  2. Go to your Account page and change your online ID from there (the edit button is next to your online ID)
  3. The rest is the same as on the PlayStation – see above for more.

Now, this all seems easy and great, but keep in mind that PlayStation stated that some issues may occur when changing your PSN name.

PSN issues that can arise:

  • you may lose access to content (including paid-for content such as DLC’s)
  • you may lose your progress for those games
  • certain functions for your game may not work anymore (for both online and offline)

It seems as if these issues mostly occur with games that have come out before April 1st, 2018, since all PS4 games published after that have been designed to support the online ID change.

So if you do end up changing your name, please keep all these risks in mind. You can find the full list, as well as the instructions on how to change your online ID, on the PlayStation website.

If you’ve carefully considered your options and have come to the conclusion that yes, changing the cringy username that you created ten years ago is the right thing to do, then we applaud you for it.

And so will all your Call of Duty buddies.
