Did Valve Reveal a New 4K Steam Deck?
Valve have already revealed plans to create a new iteration of the Steam Deck, one that possibly supports 4K. During a recent interview, Greg Coomer and Lawrence Yang opened up about Valve's plan to grow the product upon its launch, as well as introduce new iterations to what will be releasing shortly.
In regards to future versions of the Steam Deck, including the possibility of a new 4K Steam Deck, the Valve designers had the following to say:
We’re already looking ahead to the future because we believe this is a product line that will have a long life, so of course we’re thinking about what would we build next, and we’re starting to make plans in those directions
It's important to note that this is not a confirmation of a 4K Steam Deck, but instead a confirmation that once the OG Steam Deck drops in December, more iterations will be on the way.
Speaking of the version of the Steam Deck due out in December of 2021, the designers confirmed that achieving 4K "wasn't really a design target" but that a 4K Steam Deck was a real possibility in the future.
"What would that device actually look like?" asked Lawrence Yang, "How long could it run those games? How hot would it get?" It's uncertain to know, but Yang did mention that the technology needed to produce the game performance they would want is there.
The thing is, Valve is going to iterate. They will iterate upon their iterations, and then iterate upon the iterations of their original iteration. This process will continue on and on. As much of a tongue twister as that was, if Valve continue along this promising path of technological progress, a 4K Steam Deck is probably not that far out of reach...
