Jedi Survivor Reviews: Overwhelmingly Positive, Despite Technical Difficulties

The first reviews are out for Jedi: Survivors, and they're almost all very positive, with some describing this as the "best Star Wars game in 20 years". But sadly, there is one major problem: the PC port.

It can often be hard to trust a single review; the author might have a bias towards the devs that you don't share, or they might simply be overlooking certain flaws that are important to you. But in the case of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, almost all the reviews have reached the same consensus.

Jedi Survivor is being widely described as a rich and immersive RPG. Apparently, the game has a solid story and enjoyable gameplay, but everyone is mentioning one major flaw. Let's dig into the reviews.

Jedi: Survivor Gets Impressive 86% Metacritic Score... On PS5

Let's start with the positive: Jedi Survivor seems to have successfully transformed the franchise from a more linear experience into a great RPG, and most reviewers were very happy with the game they played. Here are some of the highlights.

Almost all the critiques are praising Jedi Survivor for expanding on the first game and providing something with greater customization and replayability. As IGN write:

Rather than taking us back to square one to begin Cal’s journey as a Padawan again, we’re trusted with control of a full-fledged Jedi Knight who we can grow into a master of superhuman mobility and fantastic and challenging combat. With a new set of larger, more diverse, and densely packed worlds to explore.

Many, including Polygon, have described the story as good enough for a game like this:

Jedi: Survivor’s plot itself is not going to wow you with unexpected twists and turns [...] Of course, a story doesn’t have to be surprising to be enjoyable, and truthfully, Jedi: Survivor’s core narrative is mostly a vehicle to bring you to new locales.

The Guardian were particularly impressed by how well the game captures the cinematic wonder of Star Wars:

Not only is it a masterclass in cinematic action, but its eclectic mixture of mechanics is also much more elegantly implemented. The result is the best Star Wars game in 20 years, as compelling in the hands as it is magnificent on the screen.

But for balance, here was one of the few negative reviews we've found. Eurogamer described Jedi Survivor as derivative:

Fundamentally the fun of these new Jedi entries is their nature as these kinds of supermarket games - the broad, play-as-you-like action-adventure games with RPG elements, that are eminently enjoyable and absolutely have their place, being accessible and filled with choice. But there's no specialisation here and so no conviction, and no real, special magic that comes with it.

Of course, many gamers will be just fine with Star Wars Jedi Survivor relying on cookie-cutter mechanics, and we doubt many of you were expecting something truly innovative, but it's a slight disappointment all the same. If all of this sounds good to you, you can order Jedi Survivor now on Amazon .

However, there is one flaw that almost everyone agrees on: this game sucks on PC.

Jedi Survivor Receives Lower Metacritic Score On PC: Tech Problems To Blame

All the great points mentioned above are true for every version of the game, but whereas on PS5 you can enjoy exploring the new locales at a consistent framerate, the same cannot be said for PC. Now, there is a day one patch coming for PC, so maybe all the issues with the PC port will be fixed, but that seems highly unlikely.

The YouTuber SkillUp described the problems he had trying to run the game on PC:

It struggles to maintain 40 fps on a 2080ti/3700x and my 4090/5950x cannot maintain a solid 60 fps. There’s also a game breaking audio bug atm that ruins every cutscene.

Obviously a 4090 should not struggle to maintain 60 fps, and so this is almost certainly a case of poor optimization, but it's sadly something PC users have become all too familiar with in recent years. We are still exploring possible solutions, and we will update you if we discover any tips and tricks to try and improve the PC version of Jedi: Survivor.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be released on Friday, April 28 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S & PC.

Sometimes PC players get the sh*tty version of the game, and sometimes console players do. Here's an example of console players getting shafted:
