Sony is starting to ramp up its production, seemingly spurred on by Microsoft acquiring Activision. Now we get to look forward to 10 new Sony live service games.
Gotta love earnings calls: They talk about money, and we get the news we so desire. The latest earnings call revealed some of Sony's plans for the next couple of years. Unsurprisingly, the company is not looking to sit idle after buying Bungie, and they have big plans indeed:
Sony Wants To Release 10 Live Service Games
Well, honestly, the headline is the story: Sony wants to ship 10 live service games by 2026. There's no word on which games, what genre, what license... just that we will get 10 live service games by 2026. If you're unsure, live-service means that the game will be supported over a long time, like Fortnite, or as is planned for the next Assassin's Creed, which will be live service.
Now, of course, Bungie knows a thing or two about live-service, since Destiny is a live-service game. Naturally, then, Bungie factors into this decision, and it's been confirmed that they're also working on a "major new IP". Interestingly, this new Bungie IP will not be PlayStation exclusive, as Bungie currently has no plans to limit their games to Sony's console. Bungie has already confirmed this, but here's industry insider Christopher Dring, who has a little more insight into Sony's business plans:
When Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard, they didn’t just buy Call Of Duty… they bought every game they’ve made in thirty years of history… Sony is a little more hesitant.
Personally, I love what Sony is doing here, but I gotta say...: It's surprising. To drop $4 billion on a developer, only to then not make the games exclusive? Sure, they still earn on every sale, but I'm wondering what the long-term plan is, since, in one way or another, the goal certainly must be to get people to buy the PlayStation. I've never heard of a more effective approach than exclusivity, but who knows what Sony is cooking up. Time will tell, and, in time, we can look forward to those 10 live service games.
