Smash Bros Killer? Nickelodeon All-Star Gameplay Looks Smooth

Nickelodeon All Star brawl gameplay breakdown reveal wavedashing
Seriously, Aang's gonna have to have some special wavedashing or aerial techniques. | © Nickelodeon, Avatar The Last Airbender, Filipe Emerson

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl just had an official gameplay reveal in the form of a gameplay breakdown which showed off and detailed some mechanics like the super-smooth wavedashing techniques.

Learn from the best – that's how it goes, right? That's also what Nickelodeon All-Stars seems to be going for, because they straight-up took the wavedashing technique from Super Smash Bros and... well delivered. It looks good. This confirms what Nickelodeon has been so adamant about: Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl has some legit competitive aspirations and is not a quick cash-grab capitalizing on popularity (*cough* Arceus *cough*). The devs insist that Nickelodeon All-Stars will be deep and complex, while staying accessible for beginners. Yeah, sounds like they want their cake and eat it too, but... this does look smooth as eggs:

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl Gameplay Breakdown

In the video above, the character designer and programmer goes into detail on what it is that sets Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl apart from its competition, which is not only Smash Bros, but also the more competitively viable Brawlhalla.

We don't want to break down what you can watch anyway, but let us quickly summarize for those that might not have time to indulge in the video: Attacks are divided in up, down, and mid-variants for lights, strong, special and aerial attacks. These attacks follow a rock-paper -scissors system of what beat what, and, on top of that, you get grabs, shields, wavedashing, air-dodging, strafing, and more. Yup... we can see the depth, and we also see Spongebob kids crying when they get their a** handed to them by tryhards.

The release date is about a month away – October 5 – so we will probably get some more gameplay in the coming weeks, before the game releases for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Whether it will surpass Smash in popularity and Brawlhalla in terms of competitive integrity, will also largely depend on its online connectivity, but, so far, we have no word on whether or not the game will include rollback netcode.
