Nintendo have recently filed patents that give a lot away about some of the gameplay advancements we can expect to see from the sequel to Zelda: Breath of the Wild. They mostly revolve around the flying and floating mechanics. It looks like Nintendo are responding to the popularity of scenes like those pictured above. Anyway, enough nattering from us, let's get into these patent applications.

The Gameplay Patents

You can click on the following patents to be taken directly to their official descriptions, but we'll explain each one and its potential applications for Zelda.

This one is effectively for a mechanic that will allow Link to fire an arrow while free-falling through the air. A bit weird to patent something like that, you might think, but Nintendo are fearlessly protective over their patch, and so it makes sense in that context. Also, you can see Link perform a move that looks like that in the E3 trailer, so yeah, we're certain this one is coming into the next Zelda game.

This one is a bit silly, but it allows Link to push his way through solid objects as he's falling. Again though, you can see a stunt like this in the recent E3 trailer, so we're quite confident it's coming to the next Zelda game.

US20210370178

This one is the most interesting (in our humble opinion), it will allow Link to return a single object to the position it was previously in. Basically selective time-travel. Sound fun?

When will the Breath of the Wild Sequel be released?

Unfortunately we don't have any official release date for the sequel to Zelda: Breath of the Wild. And knowing Nintendo...don't hold your breath for anything soon. If there was ever a company that knew they had their audience over a barrel its Nintendo.

Until then maybe the new Digimon can keep you entertained?
