So the director of District 9 and writer of Altered Carbon get together to... reinvent Battle Royale? Unexpected, but here's the deal.
Remember District 9? I do. That movie was... I don't wanna say lit, but it was special. Now, the director, Neill Blomkamp is taking his talents into gaming. I can't say that I've ever heard of a Hollywood director working on a video game, but I sure don't mind one as creative as Blomkamp taking his talents into our favorite industry.
Off The Grid Will Change Battle Royales
The name of the game is Off the Grid, and like every game, it promises to shake up the genre. This one obviously comes with the Hollywood firepower I mentioned above, as well as the writer of Altered Carbon providing a solid script.
Gameplay-wise, Off The Grid will have 150 players face off in PvE story missions, that are taking place across the massive map in real time. Obviously, players' actions will affect the missions of other players, and it promises to create unique gameplay that's different on each run. We even got a little teaser, though it truly is a teaser, and doesn't reveal anything significant:
Here's a quote from Blomkamp himself, explaining - like all before him - why this one will be different from the others:
With Off The Grid our ambition is not only to create the Battle Royale 2.0 by adding deep player progression, but to build an evolving world designed to take on a life of its own, changing in unexpected ways each time a player rejoins the game.
With an innovative approach to the Battle Royale core session flow and a deep narrative experience, we add purpose to each element of the game, allowing players to revisit the OTG world repeatedly where there is always something new to find and explore, and for us to expand upon.
Sounds promising, but, of course, so does every game in its marketing phase. For now, we don't have a release date, nor do we know what platforms to expect the game on, but that should all change in the near future.
