A Red Dead Redemption remaster was rumored for weeks. What Rockstar ended up delivering is a big letdown.
Rumors of a new version of the beloved 2010 classic Red Dead Redemption (RDR) have been around for years. Recently they were fired up again, as the 13-year-old game has been rated by the Korean ratings board.
These rumors intensified as industry insider Colin Moriarty (formerly of IGN and Kinda Funny) seemed to confirm what we were all hoping for: a Red Dead Redemption remaster is actually happening.
Or... is it? Rockstar did indeed reveal a new version of Red Dead Redemption, but neither is it the next Red Dead Redemption iteration, nor is the result pretty exciting.
Red Dead Redemption "Remaster" Is Actually A Disappointing Port
On August 7, Rockstar confirmed a new version of Red Dead Redemption, their timeless classic. But, it is unfortunately not actually a remaster. Our dreams are apparently dead for real, as this new version is merely a port for PS4 and Switch.
The port will release on August 17 for $49.99 and will include the Undead Nightmare DLC. This really seems to be just a port, as none of the official wording claims any improvements or changes to the game:
Experience the epic Western adventure Red Dead Redemption and its groundbreaking zombie-horror companion, Undead Nightmare, as both games come to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 for the very first time in a single package. In a new conversion by Double Eleven Studios, the Switch and PS4 versions bring the two classic experiences together again for both new players and original fans to enjoy across modern consoles, including backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 5.
If you're an Xbox One or Series kinda guy and are ready to get the pitchforks out, calm yourself and stop worrying: the original Xbox 360 version is backwards compatible on the latest Microsoft console generations. And much cheaper than 50 bucks!

While it is definitely nice to get one of the best games of all time on more consoles (especially the Switch), it is a bit of a letdown that this is not a proper remaster after all. However, after the distaster that was the GTA Trilogy, maybe this is for the best...
