GTA this, GTA that, GTA Medieval: Rustler is exactly the latter and is exactly what some of us need while we're waiting for GTA to come back, More than that though, Rustler is an interesting and original new game that should not be missed.
Some of you might be too young to remember GTA 2, but contrary to popular belief, that's the one that started the hype. The top-down view was amazing, and the carnage was unprecedented. Sure, GTA III and Vice City ushered in the beautiful 3D era that we all know and love, but there's something about the old-school charm that was timeless. Now Rustler is bringing that back in a medieval dressing that doesn't feel out of time at all.
- What's up with all those GTA-like games?
Rustler Is Literally Medieval GTA 2
I mean, literally. They call themselves Grand Theft Horse. Yeah. Developer Jutsu Games wears the inspiration on their sleeves, and Rustler is all the better for it. What you get is familiar to anyone that played GTA 2: Top-down view, an abundance of missions, dark humor and, of course, a police wanted system. Now, I hear hardcores thinking "what about the radio, though?" Well, well, well, in Rustler, you can hire a bard to ride along on your horse for your auditory entertainment – you just have to punch the bard to change the song.
While Rustler is medieval in its looks, it doesn't take authenticity too seriously: Cab horses have black and yellow carriages and can be pimped like cars could in GTA. There are criminal bosses and drug dealers, corrupt cops and prostitution. The main character is your typical GTA blueprint: A murderous asshole working with all these criminals, yet, still, somehow... you find him likeable.
All in all, the game is trying to be GTA so hard that it can be a bit too much. Childish... if you will. There are cross-dressing jokes and so many pop-culture references that even Netflix can't keep up. Still, it's an easy game to recommend for anyone that loves carnage and games that don't take themselves seriously. Here's some gameplay for you, so you can get a real idea of what the game is like:
Rustler is releasing on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch and the PC on August 31 – which is today. For 25$ you can't go wrong if any of the above appeals to you. If all of this didn't sound GTA-enough for you, maybe this will:
