The Last of Us 2 multiplayer data suggests that Factions 2 could include a Battle Royale mode – that is what data miners unearthed within the game's multiplayer assets.
You might remember that The Last of Us 2 was actually supposed to come with a multiplayer mode. Sadly, Naughty Dog put a stop to those plans in order to focus on the single player experience. Actually, scrap the 'sadly': It was a smart decision by Naughty Dog, but now that we all played the single player campaign, it would, of course, be nice to have a multiplayer that keeps us coming back to this masterpiece of a game.
Since the scrapped bundled-in multiplayer, common assumption has been that the multiplayer will ship as a stand-alone game: Factions 2, set in the same universe, not dissimilar to how Ghost of Tsushima is now releasing its multiplayer as a stand-alone.

The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Factions 2 Could Be a Battle Royale
Thank goodness for Speclizer and his tech-savvy mind and fingers (wait, why does that sound dirty...): The dataminer unearthed a video with some hidden multiplayer assets from The Last of Us 2 that feature a lot of Battle Royale specific features:
- Huge map? Check.
- Battle Royale Compass? Check.
- Player Count? Check.
- Emotes? Check.

Now, I don't know about you, but I loved the original Factions for its atmosphere and pace: It was tactical, it was slow, it was... dark and gritty. The multiplayer was far removed from the cosmetic horror-show that many modern Battle Royales often turn into. It felt like a mature take on a mature matter: Shooting and killing. While the headshotting-nature of all shooters is grim, The Last of Us: Factions seemed to actually grasp and convey that fact.
This whole Battle Royale thing now has got a brother slightly worried, but I doubt Naughty Dog is going to stray from the path and turn it into a microtransaction-fest. They've always been clear about what tone they want to capture with which game, which is why they have an Uncharted and a The Last of Us in the first place: One is for light-hearted themes and the other is a bit more grim. Keeping that in mind, there's nothing stopping me from making the bold claim that a The Last of Us 2: Factions 2 Battle Royale mode could just be the BR for everybody tired of the current market offering.
