This Game is Literally Valheim Meets Diablo Meets Zelda

Tribes of Midgard was part of the Gearbox E3 conference and looks like a Diablo-like isometric Valheim action RPG with Zelda-like cel-shaded graphics. Basically: Tribes of Midgard looks amazing.

If you touched a gamepad, mouse or keyboard in the last 10 months, then you know Valheim. If you know video games at all, you will have heard of Diablo and Zelda. Now put all of this together, and you get Tribes of Midgard. If you're not familiar with any of those games, shame on you. Also, we got you:

What is Tribes of Midgard?

Tribes of Midgard shares very obvious similarities to Valheim: It has a viking theme, and it's a survival game. That's it. Also, that's basically all that Valheim is, so that comparison is fair. More than that though, Tribes of Midgard features a Saga mode that is more story-driven than Valheim in addition to its survival mode. Either mode can be you solo or with up to ten friends as a PvE experience, with the world scaling to however many people you're with in any given session.

Tribes of Midgard: Story & Gameplay

If you're playing in Saga mode, you will get a story, which will see you protecting the Seeds of the World Tree against the coming Ragnarök. If you watched the Thor movie, you should be familiar enough. To do all this protecting, you collect resources and build up the image this tree is housed in. The difference between Saga mode and survival is that the former ends once the story is over, whereas survival has the familiar endless loop.

Gameplay wise, Tribes of Midgard takes the isometric approach and has you fighting a lot: You'll be fighting off giants, and you'll be doing so with abilities that do damage or heal or buff – all things action-RPG or RTS players will be familiar with. Thus, Tribes of Midgard is much more action-oriented than the more mellow Valheim.

Tribes of Midgard Release Date & Platforms

  • Tribes of Midgard will be released on July 27
  • Tribes of Midgard will be released for the PS5, PS4 and PC

That's a release date not too far away, so if this is the first time you ever heard about the game, and you're hyped for it: Lucky you. If you're on Xbox or trusting in Game Pass, unlucky you. There's no word on the game coming to the latter yet.
