Windows 11: Microsoft Finally Fixes Performance Issues On Games

Windows Updates usually stabilize the system, but sometimes they also cause some unintended effects. And so it was when Microsoft released the 22H2 Update, which ended up causing performance problems on games. Microsoft meanwhile even stopped the rollout for the update; but now there are finally some good news.

Windows 11 version 22H2 could cause performance issues on certain games.

I'll start with a personal recommendation: if you're still on Windows 10 and happy with it, stay with it, no matter how much Microsoft urges you to upgrade to Windows 11 in the update control center.

If you switched to Windows 11 already and you're running version 22H2, you might have experienced some low frame moments or longer loading times on games. The reason for that is that Microsoft has detected a link between version 22H2 and performance issues on certain games.

Meanwhile, the company has applied a compatibility hold on affected devices, stating that "some games and apps might experience lower than expected performance or stuttering on Windows 11, version 22H2. Affected games and apps are inadvertently enabling GPU performance debugging features not meant to be used by consumers."

Fortunately, the issue seems to have been resolved, a Microsoft statement says. So there are two scenarios now:

  • If you haven't installed 22H2 yet, you can now do so in the Windows Update Center.
  • If you're already running on 22H2, check whether Microsoft offers you the update KB5020044 in the Windows Update Center. Besides that, chances are good that the update has already automatically installed itself during the last days; you can just check this in the update history in the Windows Update Center as well.
