Microsoft is working on a cloud-based MMO, which apparently involves Hideo Kojima. Rumored title: Pax Dei.
So, rumor has it that Microsoft is working on an MMO that is exclusive to Xbox and entirely cloud-based. Actually, rumor doesn't have it – fact has it: This game is happening, and, to make things even better, Hideo Kojima is involved.
New Cloud-Native Xbox MMO: What We Know
The main studio behind this upcoming "game of a lifetime" is Mainframe – a Finnish developer working on their first game. Yup, their first game and the genius Hideo Kojima is involved. Talk about pressure. But let's unwrap this bit by bit.
The tentative title is Pax Dei, which translates to Peace of God. The game will be entirely cloud-based, meaning it will not even be available for download, much less offline-play. The way it's designed, each device will bring natural benefits, such as inventory organization being easier on phone, while combat works best on console, and large-scale raids are best done on PC. In expert terms, this is called 'scaled complexity'. Fancy. Also, here's some fancy, boring, corporate bla-bla:
"Mainframe was formed by veteran developers in Helsinki and Reykjavík,” according to the studio’s website. “We’re creating a cloud-native MMO, a vibrant world with new ways to engage and connect with our friends. It’s the game of a lifetime.
Still, this sounds exciting, if also worrying: Intentionally scaling the complexity based on devices could also turn out to be a big gameplay flaw. The idea of a cloud-based game, though, is exciting, as it means the game could literally be endless in scope and re-define what 'live-service' truly means: Changes could be made on the fly, and the game could literally be ever expanding.
Is Hideo Kojima Working on Xbox MMO Pax Dei?
Well, Kojima previously stated that he wants to work on a "new format of game" that is enabled by cloud platforms, and it's long been reported that Microsoft and Xbox are in talks with Kojima Productions to sign the genius up for an Xbox exclusive game. Call us conspiracy theorists, but all things are pointing to Kojima being involved in this new Xbox MMO. Plus, Pax Dei sounds like such a Kojima name.
