The Last of Us 2 Roguelike Mode Will Apparently Have More Than Ten Maps

The Last of Us 2 is being remastered for PS5. But in addition to all the content from the original game, TLoU II Remastered will also include a roguelike mode that is going to include at least twelve maps. This should massively increase replayability.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered is going to be released on January 19, 2024, which is only about three and half years after the original TLoU II was released. Has technology progressed far enough in three and half years to justify a remaster? Who's to say, but we are at least happy to confirm that TLoU II Remastered is only $10 if you own TLoU II on PS4 . And this is quite a good price point when you consider all the additional content coming with the remaster.

Besides being a better looking experience compared to the PS4 version of the game (this remaster will feature "native 4K output in Fidelity Mode [and] 1440p upscaled to 4K in Performance Mode"), The Last of Us Part II Remastered will also feature the following new content:

  • "Lost Levels" (A series of new levels)
  • New Outfits
  • Guitar Free Play
  • "No Return" (a new mode roguelike survival mode)

New information has just leaked regarding the roguelike survival mode in The Last of Us 2 Remastered. Apparently, "No Return" will feature at least twelve maps! If nothing else, this confirms that the mode has been allocated a decent amount of resources and development time. Hopefully it's very good, because we'll need something replayable to keep us going until the multiplayer standalone game is released.

The new mode is called "No Return" and all we know about it is this:

The mode includes a host of playable characters to choose from – some playable for the first time in The Last of Us franchise (which you may have spotted in our trailer) – who each come with their own traits to suit different playstyles.Players will chart their own course on each run, choosing between various stealth and combat encounters that will pit you against a range of enemies, with unique twists that can add new, unexpected factors to any given encounter.
Each run will offer a new chance to decide what rewards you get after each encounter, how you spec out your character, and more. Unlock more characters, skins, and more as you progress to use in the mode, customize your own runs, and compete on a global leaderboard as part of a Daily Run

It's a much more advanced and comprehensive mode than many might have expected, and thanks to a recent leak, we now know that there will be at least twelve maps/encounters in the mode.

The "leak" was first shared by content creator Joanastic, who noticed that an employee of Naughty Dog mentioned working on twelve maps for the new roguelike survival mode in the experience section of their LinkedIn profile. Classic.

This original source has now been deleted, as you would expect, but we believe the information can be trusted. In the reveal trailer for the TLoU 2 we've already seen five of the maps/encounters (courtesy of u/AnUncutGem):

  • Jackson
  • Arcade Ellie Day 3
  • Subway Ellie Day 1
  • Downtown Ellie Day 1
  • Abby Day 3

It's not hard to believe that seven more maps exist in addition to the ones above that we've already seen.

In the announcement press release from mid-November, they promised to share more info about No Return before launch. So maybe we will have confirmation for you on all the maps/encounters by then. If not, the full game is only a few weeks away now.

Are you excited about No Return? Is it enough to justify paying $10, or do you think they should have released this remaster as a free upgrade for those who owned the PS4 version? That's for each consumer to decide for themselves, but even if No Return is a flop, at least we can guarantee one great feature:
