With Overwatch 2 Season 8 on the horizon and BlizzCon in full swing. Blizzard finally announced the next tank hero. Mauga is set to make his debut soon, offering players a chance to get a sneak peek during a trial weekend before his official release with the new season.
Overwatch 2 season 8 is coming closer, and with the start of BlizzCon, they finally announced the next hero. Mauga is going to make his way into the game as the newest tank hero in Overwatch 2.
Although he will be fully added into the game with the launch of season 8, players will be able to play him in a trial weekend, available now through Sunday, November 5.
Overwatch 2 Season 8: New Hero Announced
Well, Mauga is not only an already existing character in the Overwatch universe, but also a very popular one. He appeared in the Baptiste short story "What you left behind" as a strapping Talon force and a former friend of Baptiste's.
Mauga is a Heavy Assault at Talon, and therefore has a big, bulky stature and heavy armor. Unsurprisingly, he will be a tank in the game.
Mauga Abilities
Mauga features a kit that is designed to bash through the front lines and brawl his opponents in close-quarter combat, by wielding two powerful Chainguns that can either be fired individually or in unison.
- Incendiary Chaingun "Gunny": This chaingun can ignite enemies, causing them to burn when they take sufficient damage.
- Volatile Chaingun "Cha-Cha": Mauga can use this chaingun to deliver critical hits to his enemies, finishing them off effectively.
- Berserker Passive: Mauga's Berserker Passive ability grants him temporary health whenever he deals critical damage, making him a formidable force on the battlefield.
- Overrun: Charging ability that cannot be stopped by any crowd control abilities, and stomps into opponents dealing a powerful knockback
- Cardiac Overdrive: Create an aura that reduces incoming damage, allowing allies to heal themselves while dealing damage.
- Cage Fight (Ultimate): Traps nearby opponents in a cylindrical fighting ring. This barrier blocks incoming damage or healing from the outside
In case you didn't know, Mauga was originally intended to be Hero 31. However, as the design for the new hero came together, Blizzard decided that it didn't suit Mauga's personality and instead created an entirely new hero, Sigma. About four years ago, Geoff Goodman and Joshua Noh stated that they still plan on making him a playable hero in Overwatch. Seems like the time has finally come!
But that's not all news for season 8 in Overwatch 2; Blizzard also revealed that there will be plenty more content to come, including the brand new PvP game mode, "Clash" as well as the new map, Hanaoka, inspired by Hanamura.
As an Overwatch veteran who has played the game since its original release in 2016, this new map is going to awaken some nostalgia because Hanamura was an all-time favorite map for many people. Now, seeing the Japanese theme making a return in Overwatch 2 fills my heart with joy.
