Pretty Little Liars Season 2: Creators Aim For A Texas Chain Saw Massacre Vibe

Pretty Little Liars got a reboot back in 2022 with "Original Sin." Now, it's time for the girls to live through even more horrors in season 2, and it's going to get a lot worse than attending "Summer School" – in fact, the creators want to take a more drastic approach á la Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

The Pretty Little Liars reboot is gearing up for season 2 (just like House of the Dragon. Thanks, HBO!). And the horrors persist: it's called "Summer School". And if that wasn't enough, it gets even worse as the creators shared what they have planned for the poor Millwood girls – haven't they been through enough?

Remember the original Pretty Little Liars? Did you know the books basically tell a whole other story than the show? I'd give them a try if I were you.

For those of you who missed it: yes, Pretty Little Liars got a reboot and, thankfully, it's not bad. It's quite different from the original, and thankfully less trashy.

In Millwood, the new liars are tormented by a new "A", looking for revenge for something their mothers did over twenty years ago. The girls team up to solve the mystery of why they are the target of their assailant, and it's got more of a slasher vibe to it than the original show.

Season 1, "Original Sin", ended with A's identity being revealed after a series of quite brutal revelations.

The show's creators Lindsay Calhoon Bring and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa shared in an interview with Cosmopolitan that the new season's villain will be much scarier than A ever was – poor girls don't know what's coming to them. We do, though, thanks to Aguirre-Sacasa:

Our villain is a female figure of horror, which is something we really wanted to explore in our female-centered horror show. We also wanted our villain to feel quite apocalyptic and terrifying. And because most of our season is set during summer—besides taking inspiration from from our favorite slashers—we wanted it to feel a little more apocalyptic, like something like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre or even Midsommar.

That kinda sounds like Pretty Little Liars is turning into Netflix's Scream, doesn't it? Co-creator Bring added some more info about what it looks like in the writers' room:

The scares are a bit bigger, and badder and bolder. We do have a new a new villain who possibly is connected to Archie Waters, as we’ll learn early on in episode 1. Roberto and I and our writers are all very obsessed with Creepypasta (online horror stories), so we love sort of having our own website. And this horror villain is going to test every one of the girls and they’ll go on their own personal journey.

When Does Pretty Little Liars Season 2 Release? Who's Coming Back?

We're still waiting for an official release date, but the window is already set: Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is supposed to come out in spring 2024 on HBO Max.

The main cast will return to reprise their roles:

And if the first season's finale is anything to go by, we think we'll see some of the OG cast members again. Aria and Ezra should return, but there's no news yet on whether Lucy Hale and/or Ian Harding will join them. Still, fingers cross for a cameo!
