Players getting emotional during games is nothing new, and it's safe to say that everyone has a bad day every now and then. But competitive multiplayer games like League of Legends are surely bringing out the worst of their players sometimes. Now, LoL players are sharing their stories of bad behavior.
Sometimes you have a bad day, and you hope that playing a few rounds of your favorite game might calm you down. And sometimes, the exact opposite happens, especially if your favorite game is a team orientated competitive multiplayer title like League of Legends, Counter-Strike or DotA 2.
Many gamers are claiming that their game has the worst community by far, as if there would be a competition for that. But whatever, now a popular thread in the League of Legends Subreddit has gone viral. In it, LoL players share their experiences of their own bad behavior in-game and how LoL brings out the worst in them.

How LoL Brings Out The Worst Side Of Its Players
Everybody can get emotional during a game of their favorite title, but some players can't seem to control themselves. I guess everybody has encountered aggressive, toxic or salty players at one point. Especially in competitive games like League of Legends the mood can change very quickly.
In a thread on the League of Legends Subreddit the user "CelticDK asked the community, "honestly, how different are in the game than in real life?" A very interesting question for sure, and many answers can be found in the comment section.
Honestly, how different are you in game than in real life? by u/CelticDK in leagueoflegends
Many players are sharing their experiences with their own toxic behavior and how League of Legends is able to bring out the worst of them. And why flaming new players is a common thing in the game.
For example the user "IHaveOneLifeToLive", who describes how different he is in-game, compared to his "normal" personality:
I’m toxic and rage at people in game if they are an asshole to me, but in real life it’s very seldom I get so heated, especially over such small thingsI’d like to think yeah the game brings out the worst in me 😅
Or the user "Gator_07", who revealed, that he has flamed players, that were obviously new, and felt bad afterwards:
I’ve done that. Makes you feel fucking awful when you realize that it’s a brand new player and that’s one of their core experiences in the game
The two faces of a LoL player's personality gets describes perfectly by the user "Gjyn", who even opens up about why he could say things online, that he would never spoke out in the real world:
Honestly, I'm much more "extroverted" in league than irl. Jokes I'd never tell a soul irl I would spam in all chat. Idk why it's easier. Maybe because the screen protects me from the awkward stares and glances I'd get if I tried irl.
The user "mystireon" seems to be the total opposite, since he declares himself to be way more aggressive in real life than in the game. Even tho, it might be because he fears that the other player might throw the game:
I actually tend to be more toxic irl than I am in game since sarcastically calling someone a prick doesn't always carry over well in chat and generally I'm a lot more worried about league player's mental booming at the smallest form of criticism, so I try to just stay in a positive mindset throughout the game.
The Never Ending Cycle Of Toxic Behavior In-Game – And Why Our Toxicity Affects Ourselves The Most
But why do players ruin games so often?
It is important to note that 'often' does not reflect the actual number of games that are purposefully being ruined. Sometimes, players just have a bad game – which, unfortunately, can lead others to cease their efforts to try to win the game. This active decision may make players feel like they are in control of their team's destiny. This came to light in a different thread.

This is more often than not caused by negative spirals, which are more common in League of Legends than you would think! Many times, players are just trying to break a losing streak without noticing that their mental state is not in the right place. Other times, players just feed into their obsession with League of Legends. This is dangerous too, as it can lead to an addiction.
However, it is safe to say that not everyone rage-queueing is actually on the verge of an addiction. A vast majority of the community still consists of normally functioning people who simply have a bad day or get caught off-guard by the League community's shenanigans. You do not need any traumatic experiences in your life to be ruining your League experience – you just need to be annoyed at the game.

Conclusion – Time For LoL Players To Take Up Yoga
It's interesting to read all the comments and the shared stories, opinions and experiences, since toxicity has been a huge problem in multiplayer games seemingly forever. It's safe to say that the competitive environment of League of Legends and the fact that you can always blame another player truly brings out the worst face of all people.
The easiest way to stay calm is to just treat LoL as what it is, a game. A game made to enjoy with friends or colleagues or just with random people from all over the world. If you're in a bad mood, maybe LoL isn't the right game for you at this moment. This might be a general advice, since a lot of other multiplayer titles are having the same community problems.
However, should you ever find yourself in a difficult match, finding yourself unable to tell whether it is worth to actually play it out, remember this: diamonds are formed under pressure, and the sweetest victories come when the odds are against you.
