Nicolas Cage has bad news for fans of action films about historical American artifacts.
National Treasure didn't receive particularly positive reviews in 2004. Nevertheless, there was a sequel in 2007 and even a TV show adaptation in 2022. Since then, rumors about a third film installment have persisted, but lead actor Nicolas Cage recently crushed the dreams of the fans.
National Treasure Highly Unlikely To Continue
In an interview with Screen Rant, Nicolas Cage revealed that the prospects for a continuation of the National Treasure series look very bleak.
See, you're the one that brings these things up and they go out and they eclipse everything else. No, there is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don't look at Disney, okay? It's not there.
Cage fans will have to make do with the first two installments for now. The story of "National Treasure" was wild enough in 2004: Nicolas Cage, playing Benjamin Franklin Gates, embarked on an adventure to steal the United States Declaration of Independence. He did so because he believed that a map to lost Freemason treasure could be found on the back of the document.
In the sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets, our friend Ben sets out to find a lost treasure of the Knights Templar and, in doing so, reveals the truth about the conspiracy behind the assassination of President Lincoln.
It's probably best that Cage is focusing his talents on other projects for now, as the National Treasure movies failed to resonate with many fans. Whereas, he's found great success recently in a number of other projects, including the ironic action comedy movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, his role as Dracula in Renfield, and his inclusion as himself in Dead by Daylight.
