Yesterday, EA announced a new Star Wars game coming this October. In Squadrons, players will be able to pilot starfighters in either single or multiplayer modes.
Well, what do you know EA are actually making good use of that Star Wars license. Ever since acquiring it in late 2012, the company has dished out a couple of titles which led to some free publicity. After the disastrous reception of Battlefront 1 & 2 EA are now on a path to redeem themselves. With the recent release of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the company earned some good boy points. The mix between Dark Souls (yeah we know) and Star Wars was surprisingly successful. There was also another title which we’ve almost forgotten about, 1313, but that project is dead, so we’ll be moving on. It’s time to talk about Squadrons.
Star Wars Squadrons
The next installment in the Star Wars gaming franchise will be Squadrons and it'll be solely focusing on space battles. But why, you ask? Players already had access to various fighters in Battlefront II. What's the difference? Squadrons will be a first-person experience. In case you didn't quite feel like a TIE pilot during BF2, then Squadrons will be here in a couple of months. Team composition and coordination will play a huge role, so you could say Squadrons will be a more immersive and realistic take on space battles when compared to Battlefront II. The game is developed by Motive Montreal, the same studio which worked on Battlefront II and Anthem. If you still haven’t seen the official trailer, then please do so.
Squadrons will offer players a variety of starfighters to choose from. Here are all the available ones so far:
- X-Wing
- A-Wing
- Y-Wing
- U-Wing
- TIE Fighter
- TIE Interceptor
- TIE Bomber
- TIE Reaper
This list might potentially increase further. While the trailer looks great actual gameplay footage is still unavailable. It’ll come out on June 18 during EA’s Play Live event. Me personally, after seeing the new Star Wars movies, I’m definitely ready to crush some rebel scum.
Is EA actually doing good this time?
Star Wars Squadrons will have cross-platform support, meaning players from Xbox, PS and PC will be able to play against one another. And why not, right? In a game like this, the joystick is very well-suited. Additionally, the game will be VR compatible, for anyone who wants to go to the next level. How accurate the controls will be in that case remains to be seen.
Squadrons will have a single-player campaign that will take place right after the Battle of Endor (right after the end of the original trilogy). The game’s main focus, as expected, will be a multiplayer mode. Players will be able to choose from different game modes, so far only two are known. The first one is Fleet Battles where your goal will be to destroy the enemy flagship. Then there’s Dogfights where you’ll supposedly feel like in a scene from the movie. Your objective in Dogfights is to destroy as many opponents as you can. On a really bright note, EA made the promise that customization options will be unlocked solely through gameplay. Maybe we should take that with a grain of salt, considering it’s EA after all.
Squadrons is set to arrive on October 2 with a price tag of $39.99 which sounds more than reasonable if EA fulfill their end of the bargain. Expect another update once we see some gameplay footage on June 18.
