Since the design of the new Playstation 5 was unveiled, the internet has been going wild over its size. After all, Sony's next-generation console turns out to be considerably more massive than all previous editions. Now Sony has revealed the reason behind their design choice.
Finally, we know the PlayStation 5 design. Last week Sony officially unveiled the console and the first PS5 games. We now know, at least on the basis of estimates, that the new console is quite massive. However, there is a reason for this: Sony has now commented on the PlayStation 5 size.
There's a reason for the size increase
Sony hasn't officially revealed how big the PlayStation 5 console is yet. However, the images and placement of the drive provide a relatively reliable guide that IGN used to estimate how large the PS5 would be. It looks like we'll have to make room for more space in the TV cabinet with the next-gen console, as the PS5 is likely to be significantly larger than the PS4 Pro, Xbox One X, and Xbox Series X.
IGN assumes that the console could be almost 40 cm high, 22.3 cm long, and just under 10 cm width. The Xbox Series X comes in comparison to 30 cm x 15.3 cm x 15.3 cm.
But why is the PlayStation 5 so huge? There's a good reason for this, as Sony has now revealed.

Via LinkedIn, Matt MacLaurin, Vice President of UX Design at PlayStation, revealed the design idea behind PlayStation 5, according to VG247:
Thermals. This gen is little supercomputers. While the 7nm process delivers amazing heat performance for the power, the power is very extreme. This tech is still so fresh it throws a lot of heat so we need room to dissipate
So the reason for the enormous size of PlayStation 5 is the cooling of the system. Sony wants to make sure not to repeat the mistakes of the current console generation. Fans of the first PS4 Pro models often reach the volume of an airplane turbine in current games like The Last of Us 2. Sony has already emphasized that they'll do their best to make the PS5 quieter than its predecessor console.
Hopefully, the new Playstation console will feature improvements on all fronts, not just size.
