It has been some time since the last time we saw Riot ban somebody for a long period. Team Besties and their coach just got banned for 18 months after they were found "ringing" at the VCT Game Changers NA Series 2. Here are all the details.
The last time we saw a competitive ruling by Riot Games in Valorant was in the sinatraa case. The former Overwatch player got a six-month ban following a sexual abuse investigation. Now Riot raised the stakes with an 18-month ban in their latest ruling for Team Besties.
Team Besties Banned for 18 Months From Riot Events
Team Besties were one of the participants in the recent VCT Game Changers NA Series 2. Besties took part in the open qualifiers with these registered players:
- Jenna “koi” Tang
- Katie “kateuuu” Tran
- Mia “kei” Leong
- Jasmine “memrice” Huynh
- Jennifer “wetboosy” Li
- Bella “soju” Rierad (coach)
The open qualifiers took place on June 19-20. The whole team agreed to the VALORANT Global Competition Policy and the VALORANT Champions Tour 2021 Rule Set which clearly stated that:
Team members must register no greater than one account each. In official Game Changers matches, players must only play on the account they have registered for themselves. They may not play under other accounts and may not induce anyone else, registered or unregistered, to play under their account.
Using an unregistered player to play from a registered account is called "ringing".
On June 20, tournament officials were made aware of some suspicious activity on one of the accounts on Team Besties.
Kei had played Sova in all of Team Besties’ first five games of Game Changers, accumulating a -39 kill/death differential. During these five games, kei’s ping to Texas servers was stable at 52ms. However, in the next three games against Team Invicta and 100emoji, kei’s ping to Texas servers was stable at 68ms. Kei played Jett and Reyna in these three games, accumulating a kill/death differential of +44.

Riot asked for cooperation in the investigation that followed, but Team Besties refused. The team even denied any instances of account sharing or “ringing” but eventually,Riot got to the bottom of it by checking the logs. As a result, Team Besties and their manager received an 18-month ban – 12 months for the "ringing" and 6 months for refusing to cooperate. The ban will be over in December 2022. Until then, Team Besties are banned from any association or affiliation with a team in a Riot-sanctioned league.
