Valorant is out of closed beta and the official launch is scheduled for June 2. When the servers light up the highest rank will no longer be called Valorant.
Riot Games have walked a long way with their upcoming shooter and the title spent almost two months in closed beta. Now, Valorant is on its way out as the game is about to launch this Tuesday. You might have noticed that servers are currently down and will remain so even over the weekend and Monday. Fans will have a chance to take a well-deserved break from Valorant while the development team is preparing for the official release.
During the closed beta, players had the chance of testing out the various agents, their abilities, the three maps, and much more. While many are excited that the launch will bring an additional agent, a new map, and a new game mode there also something else. The highest possible rank in Valorant will no longer be called Valiant. We initially had concerns that having the rank and the name of the game as one and the same might lead to some confusion when searching for something specific. In an email interview for Polygon, Valorant senior designer Sean Szopinski commented:
When we were brainstorming these names, Valorant seemed like a really awesome choice for the top rank. What could be cooler than climbing the ranks, aspiring to become an elite and heroic Valorant, the personification of the game itself! You guys are right though, it’s a bit confusing. We get it. I get it. We’ll change it for launch.
Szopinski didn’t reveal what the new name for the rank will be so we’ll have to wait until launch to find out. There is some speculation going on though. The majority of the ranks in Valorant have the same name as those in Riot’s other title – League of Legends. The highest possible title you can achieve there is called Challenger, so if Riot truly want to make LoL players feel at home they can equalize the ranks. Whether that’ll be the case remains to be seen.
